I have an English Mastiff.
The key when buying any dog is to know the breed's characteristics, and to work with them. Mastiffs are big, giant dogs. They are also incredibly docile, gentle dogs. They tend to be lazy. Yeah, they drool a bit, but it's not that bad. Mostly you just need to keep a towel near their water bowl and wipe them down after a drink of water.
Mastiffs tend to be GREAT with kids, other dogs, anyone. But it all comes down to socialization/training in the end.
Here are a couple of pictures of my dog, Rufus. He's a runt. Just over a year old and he weighs 125lbs. We figure he'll grow to 160lbs. His dad was 230lbs.
