Anyone have any experience on making .php files recognised on a mediaTemple .dv server... my server shows them okay, but a new server I'm setting up doesn't seem to show them unless you put the index.php in... and can't remember how to do it.

They should Just Work?
Could there be code within your individual .php files that is somehow reliant on there being an index.php in the first place?

Find a copy of phpinfo.php, upload that to your root directory, access it in-browser, and see what details it feeds back.
If it doesn't work, something's amiss with your set up.

thanks for your help... realised it was the .htaccess file in the end...
You have to put this
DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
in the order you want files to be seen

http://mysite ------> now the index will be called
before to call the index you had to do it literally:
http://mysite/index.php

not sure i get what you mean?

Why didn't you just rename or delete index.html?

I assume because his server wasn't configured to use index.php files as a valid DirectoryIndex. Therefore renaming or deleting index.html would've done didlysquat.
I love all these have-a-go-developers who know fuck all about web server configuration.- Yeh.

^ no, his server was set up correctly, he was just leaving the index.html file there. that's how a mediatemple DV works out of the box.
- must_dash0
incorrect... there was no index.html file but there was a index.php file... but it wouldn't pick up on the .php file without change the .htaccess file
- spraycan0
tahts waht i explained , you need to configure the server , i had the same problem on a windows IIS server
- spraycan0
on a IIS misconfigured server you can pick the index.php/html by making an explicit call (http://mysite/index.php)

it's curious then why my DV would be configured to fall back to php when no index.html is available without an htaccess, and yours wouldn't.
