"WOOLWORTHS insists its new logo is a stylised ''W'' or a piece of fresh produce. Apple thinks it is an apple, and the California-based technology company wants to stop Australia's largest retailer from using it.
Apple has mounted a legal challenge to prevent Woolworths from using the logo, arguing it is too close to its own."
Perhaps they should take the fruit to court...for looking too much like their logo.

If WOOLWORTHS were selling computer and software, OK. But this is not the case, so:
-1 Apple
- read the article, they are tying filing it for a trademark that could be uses on computers.imnotaplumber
- tying while asleep, they are trying to file for a trademark which could be used on computers.imnotaplumber

Yep, they'll be trying to sue God soon. Or evolution at least.

These type of disputes damage the brand more than the potential infringement would in my case. Apple ends up looking a douche in both these cases.

Rotten apple.

isn't woolworths bankrupt? they closed all their stores years ago and made them all footlockers.

the Woolworths logo is nice! Much better than Apple's IMO.
Make Apple redesign their logo.

that Woolworth logo technique is dating itself from the beginning. they'll probably be better off redesigning it.

I'm sick and tired of Apple's trademark bullshit.
- That being said, the Woolworths logo is balls.ismith

I don't know about Australia, but in the US if you don't defend your trademark, it can be used as a proof you don't care for it and you can lose it in court. You must also act against genericization of it.
It happened to many brands in the past and many are still endangered.
http://en.allexperts.com/e/l/li/…With a TM based on something as generic as an apple, they must send cease and desist letters and sue even if they don't care.

In fairness, Apple logo is one of world's top brands and is very good regardless of your hate for your own iPod from last year being out of fashion after a lineup update.
Woolworths' attempt is good too, it looks like a nice local greengrocer's chain logo, which it is.
- more than a greengrocer. They are one of the two largest supermarket chains in australia.Amicus

- hah!, not so pointless. There have been a few confrontations between my two favorite corporate fruits.CyBrain
- Take note that Apple records is also an iconic brand, and took it to court when Apple went into music.__TM

I don't mind the woolies logo but it's not gonna last too long. plus take away the shading (to a single colour/shade) and it looks like a mess.

Apple is becoming a giant arrogant asshole of a company!

"Woolworths' application includes a wide class for electrical goods and technology, putting it in direct competition with Apple should the retailer choose to brand computers, music players or other devices."
it makes sense. by the way, "W's" do not have a branch at the top. apple's do.
