I have a PC in the office works OK.
the dell at home is annoying does what it wants, when it wants. I have TrendMicro anti-virus, doesn't always running manually. now the machine won't open files, in any app.
I suspect the web and possible music listening preview sites or something. (no not porn sites!-don't you dare blame those good porn sites! :))
Seriously, what do you guys do to trouble shoot or run on your PC to keep it running smooth.
The tech guy at work runs antisoftware in safe mode besides the usual auot run of Trend Micro.

Back up all your personal files, ensure you've got your drivers to hand, get your copy of XP on CD or USB, format, re-install.

I feel like running window on a Mac would be safer. Dont know why. That way I get the best of both worlds and she doesnt complaining about not having a PC which she is used to. :P

Troubleshooting on PC's is typically an exercise in extreme frustration.
The most important thing for a PC is probably to have really good Firewall software. I ran Sygate pro for a long time - It will let you know when programs are trying to execute via the internet and when they try to maliciously connect to ports they shouldn't be. Any antivirus software helps but usually it's always after the fact when it finds it.

I've found out through experience that 'troubleshooting' typically boils down to exactly what detritus said on windows PCs - reformat and reinstall. Typically when things go awry on a PC you'll have a helluva time getting it to be functional again - especially when it's related to a virus or malicious software.
Really what's important is the preventative measures. Get a good firewall app and solid antivirus and you should be OK... Until your mom uses the thing.

And ensure you've got automatic updates on and you keep an eye on that shit.
