i think that one is for specific file types, I am not sure it will work in this case.

like VLC is trying to open jpegs and word docs? i don't think get info will fix that.
sounds odd. repair permissions.

yeah I doubt the info thing its the case.
maybe trash preferences for VLC?

So, basically all your files on Mail are named winmail.dat and VLC is set up to open .dat files for some reason, I now think this is mail issue. if repairing permisions/ restarting did not help.
Now its the time to download a system update if you dont have one installed. If that didn't help, I would check the apple forums, and if no luck then go to the apple store and talk to tech support there.Last option would be trashing mail preferences but this means that you might have to re-configure your email settings again, so this is probably last option.

I am running 10.5.6
I will start with permission repair.

is your mail server an exchange server? this is usually an issue with the sender, not receiver.

For the 1000th time lol at repair permissions sorcery :)
Truth be told, it's a good placebo, you fill better after doing it. Funny thing is, it might also solve your problem.

Exchange E-mail Attachment
File Description Winmail.dat files contain formatting information for Rich Text (RTF) messages sent from Microsoft Exchange Server; they are added to the end of e-mails when a recipient's e-mail client does not support RTF messages; the Winmail.dat file is not useful to users that do not use Outlook or Exchange Server to retrieve their mail.Read more about Winmail.dat files, including how to prevent them from being sent.
