I simply need to transfer all my crappy old camcorder videos (Video8) and encode them to burn to a DVD, but I have no idea where to start, other than I need some sort of video and audio phono cable to USB interface, plus some software.
There seems to be a few products around that could help, but most have pretty poor reviews.
Has anyone had any experience here?

you need some sort of conversor to FW.
this you probably know already, check radioshack online (not the actual store) and see there for economic options. You can check on B&H but they probably have digital decks there that are more expensive

A lot of early digital Sony Handycams had built in converters and Firewire 400 (iLink) outputs.
You could probably find a cheap used Sony Digital8 camera that plays Video8 tapes and converts on the fly. I don't know if all Digital8 cameras have the converter built in, but some do, so if you find one just google around for the specs before you purchase.

If you can borrow or have access to a domestic-type hard disc recorder, you should be able to go from your VHS/Camcorder straight into it via S-Video or standard RCA cables. Capture to HD and then back that up onto DVD. Quality is quite good.

i use a dead - sort of - dv camcorder i got for free by running rca's in from the vhs and it firewires out dv to my mac. quicktime imports it, etc. it still looks like crap but it's the only way for me to get my old muchmusic tapes to digital. now i can watch "Fromage '93" with Erica Ehm on my ipod touch, over and over. life is good.
