Another portfolio concept

Okay, I took a look at CargoCollective and realised that my favourite type of style isn't Web 2.0-esque sites, but clean, simple designs with great typography.
With that in mind, I created this design (work in progress). The image in the background will fill the entire screen up to a 1920x1080 monitor.
What do you think?
By the way, should I be starting new threads for each design or should I have them all in one? Not used to this forum system yet...

no guess this is here own portfolio
- schjetne0
Aaah right, in that case you should probably not create a new thread for every revision of the design process.
- spraycan0
if that's real size, the banner is way too long
- detritus0
I'd stick with the site you've already got and tart up the Work section a little.
- ps. you're probably the only person who cares about every iteration of your portfolio. Your clients just want their site done.detritus
- Mmm... problem is, I don't particularly like the current site... I see what you're saying though.unik
- I just find the current design boring and I feel it could be too confusing for some... with all the auto-scrolling and that.unik

- she also has a web 2.0 dialogue-box growing out of her head .. trendylukus_W

- This is the opposite of what I was thinking - I went through many different choices before deciding on Helvetica.unik
- If it bothers you so much, I'll consider using another font... although it probably won't work as well.unik
- what is wrong with Helvetica?utopian
- haha nice on jimbo - forgot about these beauties!!jimzyk

your website has a lot of web2.0 characteristics. Superlarge header, large sans-serif type. Roughly same amount of spacing etc.
- janne760
in fact you used all web2.0 cliche's except the beveled gradients and washed floor effect.
- jimbojones0
Having 6 different point sizes on one page is indeed great typography.
- This isn't the final site. I decide final font sizes when I actually develop it, this is a mockup.unik

- Okay, I posted the site design for critique, not this. I'm a student. There's no point in criticising my work because it'sunik
- going to be nowhere near as good as someone who's been in the business for five years.unik
- sam, don't take it personal. there are people who were in the industry for 10 years and still make crap. What I see here is not good, that is all.jimbojones

- except the box doesn't look very rectangular... the perspective is off a little.Amicus

I dislike the website copy ("Hey there" .. etc). Once it might have seemed daring/cute to reach out to the reader as if the site's a person striking up a conversation, but due to it's ubiquity I find it annoying/nauseating.
Work from the basics. What's the most important information on the page? Where do you want your users attention to be drawn to first? How can you anticipate your user's needs? If you think all of this kind of thing through - and let the form follow function - people will love your site.
Indexhibit is good because it cuts out the bullshit and concentrates on the work being displayed.
- This is great advice, thanks - it's given me a lot to think about.unik
- I disagree with your first comment. I think it works well in this case. my 2¢sofakingbanned

Indexhibit is a trend too though, so many postfolios look the same now. Is that a good thing? I'm not sure.
- I think it's a good thing, because it makes it easier to be objective.. i.e. you can compare work more easily, maybe?lukus_W
- .. for the same reasons, most gallery interiors are 'white cubes'.lukus_W
- I dunno, to me it's like an FTP dump with pics. A good portfolio site is definitely a plus. A bad one is definitely a minus though.jimbojones
- re: white cubes, it's always refreshing when artists actually do something with the gallery interior and tie it up with the works. But it's not always possiblejimbojones
- yeah, I agree .. in that case Indexhibit is a '0' (which may or may not be a good thing)lukus_W
- works. But it's not always possible and it's a different story on the interwebs.jimbojones
- That's true.. it would seem that cost isn't so much of a limiting factor for web portfolios (opposite true for galleries). But maybe there's a link between money-cost (for galleries) and skill-cost for (web portfolios). Galleries can't spend a lot customising each show's setting, because they don't have the cash - so they compromise with a white cube. People who aren't skilled at webdesign / development, don't have the skills - so they're better off with a bog-standard 'white cube' solution.lukus_W

- sometimes the white cube is just what it needs. it's still a different location, lighting and all every time. not so online.jimbojones

I'm gonna have to say I don't like this concept. Your current site is much nicer and I think you can do much better.
I would say just touch up your current site... but since it is your job to create new and interesting websites you should have a killer web site.
Just keep flushing out ideas, I'm sure it will payoff in the end.
- utopian0
I really admire your effort, but if you are going to use a canned 2.0 template design just stick with a krop, cargo and or indexhibit folio for your work.
- Rand0
for me, portfolios are best when you can access all of the work from the primary nav
- which probably has nothing to do with this conversationRand

I don't know how others manage this, to me the portfolio site is one of the works presented.
Good portfolio site with crappy works = crappy impression
Bad portfolio site with good works = good impression still
No portfolio site (indexhibit et al) = works decide
But I'm not hiring, so don't listen to me.- jimbojones doesn't know how others manage this, to jimbojones the portfolio site is one of the works presented.Rand

Looks like one of million variations of design generated by site-constructor
- vaxorcist0
Design for an audience of your potential clients, don't design to please an audience of your competitors.... think about who your clients are... what do THEY want/need/hope/fear?
- pylon0
Spend more time on presenting your work and less trying to come up with a really trendy framework.
As many have said, just frame your work nicely and let that do the talking. Don't over think it. Hells bells even times with blue links but good work and clear hierarchy is better than many portfolio sites out there.

I think the main problems with this comp are that the gradient colors in the header are kind of ugly and distract from the copy. Second issue is that the header text and spacing is simply way too big. If I have a small monitor, the header is all I'm going to see ;)
But I like what you're trying to do here compared with previous comps in terms of getting rid of the background image and going for a cleaner look. I think you should include the thumbnails in the mockup since it will create a much different impression. Also not 100% sold on the brown color scheme. If you go with this it needs a contrasting color, but I also think the blue on your site would work. Helvetica is fine but kind of a boring choice when the design leans so heavily on the type. Check out the Fonts thread http://www.qbn.com/topics/579758… and consider some of the other sans serifs that are similar to Helvetica but less overused. Good luck.
