If you're starting from scratch, try both and see which one feels more comfortable in your hand (ui, function control, grip etc.). image quality is very similar, they just have a different way of achieving the same thing. Whatever you decide just remember to spend the majority of your money on lenses... the bodies are disposable now.

Thanks chaps.
I'm off to the local high street right away...

check the serial numbers with the D5000. Most of them were recalled by Nikon. I'm waiting for the new D5000 to be in the shops myself.

This is the first "Canon vs Nikon" thread I've seen with some actual sensible advice. These dudes are right, try it out for size. Whichever feels good in your hand is probably the best one for you.
I've always loathed Nikon cameras, they just don't feel right for me, but that doesn't mean they're in any way bad cameras, they're just not right for ME.

The D5000 has the flip-out LCD viewfinder, which some people love. Try them both... the Canon has more pixels in the LCD on the back, and shoots 30fps 720P, the nikon 24FPS 720P.... The Canon has 14 bit RAW, the Nikon has 12 bit RAW. but the Nikon has more AF points and supposedly more trackable AF....
I shoot Canon, but if I had to start over, I'd seriously try both....
