Is there any way to have the iPhone accept .mov files and play them?
converting in iTunes takes ages...

as far as I know "nieu". m4v is playing on iPhone only. Although I've seen someone posting something about playing HD videos on iPhone.. but that doesn't work as it should either..
try converting video with Quicktime, works fast for me.

If you're a mac user than try visual hub on the wifi setting. It is very fast!
I can't be of any help on the Pc side.

upload them and play them off a server, save HD space

Export it as an H264, email it to yourself.
Export it as an H264, put it in your iDrive, download free "me" app.
Must be 640x480 or smaller.

use an app like 'iskysoft video convertor' or 'cocktail' to convert them. at least you can batch convert in the background with these.

you can play m4v and mov while the file size is less than 10mb over 3g. if larger, you'd have to be connected to wifi. Anything else, I don't know will work.
