How does one go about refreshing the contents of a finder window?
Am I being thick or is this yet another one of those apple-user ethics things that means if I want to refresh it I'm doing something wrong?
I know there are files there because I can see them via terminal. Finder denies everything though.

what os are you on?
its automatic on leopard in my experience
- moth0
10.5.8 whatever the fuck that is. It doesn't actually mention big cats anywhere. I suppose that's another feature too - omitting the name of the OX.
- Jordy0
it's automatic after less than a second when something changes ..otherwise just go back one folder and go back into it .. also refreshes it.

Computers and cars are not inanimate objects. Hate them and they'll hate you back.
Have tried talking to it in a soft voice?
- Raniator0
yeah man, just flick back a folder and go back in like Jordy says, that'll do it. sounds like a ball-ache but if you browse using column it's fucking well easy.

lol @ 'apple-user ethics' hahaha
- ribit0
It should refresh itself, but just switching views (columns > list and back) might force a refresh too.
You might want to try Pathfinder

Some info at:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.ph…Network volumes are perhaps the only use for this-I haven't tested the following too much with them. The Finder will automatically update info the instant it is changed. It uses the same technology that spotlight uses to automatically include search results without constantly indexing the hard drive. Every time a file is changed or created, the system kernel indexes it to spotlight and notifies the Finder if the file is visible in one of its windows.
Try it. Create a folder on your desktop called "test" and open it. Then open Terminal so you can still see the folder, and type "mkdir ~/Desktop/test/hello/" (without the quotes). You should instantly see a folder called "hello" inside your test folder. Then, make sure you can see the date and time modified for "hello". Wait until it is a different time from when you created the folder, then type "touch ~/Desktop/test/hello" in Terminal. You should instantly see the date modified change to the present time. You can try saving files while you watch the info too. The Finder is quite good at refreshing itself.

I make new files on desktop and when I upload it say gmail, the dialog box tells me it doesnt exist or sometimes I see on desktop it but it wont show up in my finder window tree list or it just wont show anywhere except in terminal or it will only show up in when I upload using dialog box

where is this folder? I mean is this on the network (what kind) or what, if its on your hard drive then you've fucked something up.
just BAAAWWWIng that it doesn't work isn't going to get you anywhere
- ribit0
would this be a good time for repair permissions, fsck, DiskWarrior, etc?
- moth0
What? I just want to see the fucking folders - not send in disk warriors and what not. This actually happens on my macbook pro AND my imac.
It really is the crumbliest, flakiest OS in the world.

whenever this happens CMD+OPTN+ESC and force quit finder...like magic it appears, i have only seen the error happen with mounted servers.

I rarely use Finder since I got Forklift some 3 years ago, so I never knew Finder could display outdated info. Forklift, however, can - it has Command+R and a refresh button for that.
I wonder if the rewritten Finder in Snow Leopard is free of these problems.
- I think there's some other filesystem problem going on for moth and MrDinky...ribit

Some one told me to zap the pram or rebuild desktop etc but someone else told me that with Tiger / Leopard, its not necessary. And finally genius told me that its because I am not using ram from Apple.
- You should've called his superior and be very loud in the store. They might even give you an iPod sock in apology.raf
- moth0
Does zapping the pram throw the toys out of it then?
- M_C_P0
wow. seriously? we're up to zapping PRAM and rebuilding the desktop now?
moth, just install the refresh finder app and be done. it's lightweight and you can even add it your finder icons. or did it not work for you?
