I hadn't even realised that this didn't work.
Worked in IE7 didn't it? Or am I going nuts? How can I make it work without using CSS transparency?

if there is black round the png you just havent exported the png file properly

If it worked in IE7 and doesn't work in IE8, you can force IE8 to render pages like IE7.
Use this:
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=7" />

Moth can you throw up a little sample page with the clash (JQuery / PNG). So we can take a better look at it?
