Take the night tour... not many people around and you get the benefit of running around ancient ruins in the middle of the night! Very different from the hordes of bus tours that show up during the day.

i went to Tulum on the coast 2 years ago. lots of little beachfront shacks and also the Ruinas Mayas de Tulum. I stayed at http://diamantek.com/ a great spot. Beautiful and relaxing. Enjoy your trip!

suntan lotion and sneakers.
it's good time. and yes, cozumel is worth a couple days.

just two things:
- the climb to the top is sketchy/steep. wear good sneaks.
- you must rent and view this before you go there:

also, go to cozumel. rent a moped and circle the island coastline. it's the best.

and don't bring or use drugs there. we all waited to board the cozumel ferry but not before the grumpy armed troops lined all our luggage/bags up and ran sniffer dogs along the top of them. nerve-wracking as hell. i was just waiting for a pooch to get a hit and watch them drag away some poor bastard to mexican prison... never happened but you just know it does time to time.

They don't let you client the main pyramid anymore, but you can walk up the planetarium. We did a bus group, and found it to be a lot of driving and too little time at the site. So, I recommend renting a car and staying the night. It's big, and there is a lot to see. There are also some cool Cenotes in the area you may want to check out - you can swim in them too. If you're coming from Cancun check out Valladolido, a very cool little Mexican country town with a nice square and cathedral.
