I'd do it with effect - 3D - extrude & bevel

that or use the bled tool. duplicate the shape, move it behind and to the right. make it black, the top version white. blend from one shape to the next using however many steps it needs to get what you're after.

yeah - what i find is when you expand the blend you get lots of extra points...?

i usually don't bother expanding it but if you need to you can use the pathfinder tool to unite the paths and then try the object>path>cleanup. there's a few options to do it.
do you actually need to expand it?

1. extrude bevel.
2. object > expand appearance
3. object > flatten transparency (100 Vectors)
4. select ONLY the extruded shapes
5. fill with gradient (play with gradients)
6. (optional)
If you JUST select the extrusion and fill with a gradient - you'll notice they're all different shapes, being different sizes, so the gradients will all appear differently as well. If you, once again, select ONLY the extrusions and under WINDOW > PATHFINDER > click the first shapemode and then click EXPAND - the gradient will ALL be coming in uniformally.See above.

also - taking the extruded portion, duplicating, offsetting a bit and playing with LOW transparency and multiple features will also give a bit more of a 'jilted' look if paired with a grey background
