So wait... where did all that money go?? People say she doesn't live the high life (well, I guess except millions of dollars in homes).. so...? Regardless, I can afford a 1 mil dollar home, let alone 3. Watch your money. It sounds like lack of financial knowledge on her part. Given her success, it's pretty much her fault it seems. Not really feeling sorry for her at all. She might have to live in a 500K home, oh no!!
- She is losing her rights to her own work. No incomeMrDinky

The question is not solely about personal finances but rather value of creative work in years to come. As a photographer, she maintained rights to her negatives and prints, yet in our current world what value could a digital work could gain.
Rather cliche but it is something to ponder.
We frequently talk about relative longivity of career path and how there are no old designers. What is the path and value of work being produced and how the future holds for the digital generation.

I am feeling sorry for her. She is the most bril photographer of this generation. It's a shame that real estate dealings are bringing her down - she obviously is not a businesswoman. If you read through that nymag article, it seems like her business advisors let her down.
- Who borrows $24 million though. And why would she use her own work as collateral, Surely alarm bells were ringingtoe_knee
- MrDinky0
Also she would spend her own money to get the shot right, even if her clients don't pay

She's still bringing in tens of millions a year according to the article. She got in too deep, no different from a family making 60k that got in too deep on a home purchase.
It seems to be human nature that the more you make the more you spend. Couple that with an eccentric artist like Leibowitz or MJ and it's not hard to imagine spending all that money.

"But others said Ms. Leibovitz needs to reexamine her attitude and habits around money and spending."

a 7 figure salary + her own business fees and she's broke?!? wtf? her entire extended family must have heroin and gambling addictions.

If you earn that much and you're still working then there is only one person to blame. Faces losing houseS in NY and another upstate? Funny, I can only see one of her.
Sorry, no sympathy.

its going to take her documenting another savage beating from a scorned lover for me to feel sorry for her...
- inhaler970
what photographer gets paid 7 figures and has gone on record to not know what an f-stop is.
aye aye aye
- Coffeemaker0
yeah the rights thing is crazy. but then, the american legal system is completely nutters (in the eyes of many foreigners though..).
but damnit, WHY does she need to 24 million? WHY?
If anything we learned from this crisis is that greed will hit back on you, hard.
