Just started looking at wordpress for the first time and wondering how I go about adding a custom design I'm creating for a client. Are there any good tutorial websites or books i can swat up on??
cheers

This is how I do it.
Go about how you would make a normal website.
When you have design script it so it's in html/css.
Than read the wordpess codex. Import the stuff you want to imprort/ like post, titels and stuff.
Done?

Another way is to download a premade theme (there are loads here: http://wordpress.org/extend/them…) then just rip them apart and put them back together again, in that way you can see what the WP tags do and how to get your own design wrapped around your new theme.
A good theme to start off with is the minimal theme: http://wordpress.org/extend/them… have a play and you will see it's piss easy to work with. Also smashing magazine has loads of WP tutorials and cool mods you can add to your new WP site:

Good luck!

There are naked themes that have been stripped to the bone. Add CSS and you're good to go.

its pretty easy to get started, like ravdyk said just build the website in html then import what functions you need for the wordpress codex.
I did get a copy of this though and it just confirms how easy it can be

here's the theme i've start out with - http://elliotjaystocks.com/stark… basically, the default theme with all styles removed

Do make sure you use an easy page hierarchy it will be easier if you just started

ive done a few wordpress sites lately for the first time.
if its your first one then i recommend you look around for a template that almost fits what you want then tweak it to suit.

This is a good write-up too on custom themes from scratch:
