One of the graphic designs at work has just asked me about design awards for web and printed work.
Is there any such thing and if so how do you go about entering your work??
cheers

Um... gosh, there are a ton.
Communication Arts (design annual, advertising, illustration, interactive, etc.)
Print Magazine regional design annual
Eye Magazine
HOW Magazine
Graphis (annual reports, identity, several other annuals per year)
WOLDA (World Logo Design Annual)
ADC / ADC Young Guns (the latter for under 30 only)
TDC (Type Directors Club)
AIGA 365 and regional comps (each U.S. city has their yearly design show)
Couple International Image & Design Awards
D&AD
The One Show...just to name a small handful. All of the above seem to be worth entering though.
- Was heartbroken that nothing got into TDC this year... had two or three entries that I felt were solid.gramme
- Maybe you're not quite as good as you think you are?max_prophet
- fightin' words...identity
- Maybe you're right max. Then again, maybe you're just an asshole.gramme
- I don't see any point in defending myself to the likes of you.gramme
- awards are always lottery, even if your work is rock solid.jimbojones
- 'the likes of me' lol
you incessantly preach like you're some design hero, and you have some ok work, but at the end of the day...max_prophet - the end of the day... your just a freelancer from bumblefuck nowhere. Small ponds and all that. Straight up with the bitterness though aren't you, a good Christian.max_prophet
- bitterness though aren't you, a good Christian.max_prophet
- you take yourself way too seriously grammemax_prophet
- I realize that was vindictive of me, whether it's true or not. Check your email.gramme
- At any rate, calling me bitter is quite the pot calling the kettle black, my friend.gramme
- Oh and thanks for the reminder that designers who hail from "bumfuck" are incapable of doing anything good. Because one's location is clearly a sign of talent.gramme
- one's location is clearly a sign of talent.gramme
- Oh and P.S. you don't know what the hell you're talking about chief. You have no idea what my background is, where I've lived...gramme
- I've lived...gramme
- he's not saying that b/c you come from a small town your design is bad but rather that because you come from a small town you have an over inflated sense of your design talent._salisae_
- small pool of designers you have an over inflated sense of your design talent._salisae_
- But that's just the thing salisae, he thinks he knows where I come from, but the truth is he has no idea.gramme
- ...Because I'm actually not from a small town (Baltimore).gramme
- I understand what he's saying, but it amounts to the same thing. It's pretty silly really, gramme
- the assumptions he makes about how supposedly parochial I am.gramme
- I'd like to see what objective evidence he's basing that opinion on.gramme
- ...And by this point I'm pretty sure I'm talking to myself.gramme
- gramme, i know it's a scary world and going to a movie alone is a great achievement for you but you should try to relax a bit more and stop being so pre-occupied with policing everyone's opinion of you._salisae_
- relax a bit more and stop being so pre-occupied with policing everyone's opinion of you._salisae_
- your work is top notch, you have a happy marriage, healthy child and spiritual life. we're all proud._salisae_
- now let's talk about something entirely different for awhile._salisae_
- What am I, your teen protege with the "it's a scary world" line?gramme
- I've listened to rasko give a lot of people shit here over the years for no apparent reason, and it's become rather grating.gramme
- Whatever.gramme
- I get your overall point salisae, minus the condescending intro. And you're right. There's no good reason for me to care so much.gramme
- much.gramme
- I do find it curious that in these sorts of conversations, you tend to appear out of nowhere.gramme
- Nothing personal, I just find it... oddly coincidental? Maybe that's not the phrase I'm looking for.gramme
- baltimore says it all, you are a liitle gangster, and chances are high we all saw you in the wire, my friend.digdre

Awards are bullshit. Don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise. It's a game of social politics. What it judges is how good you are at winning awards. Sometimes you're on top of that game. Sometimes you're not.

doesn't hurt on a resume though

Stewdio, I agree that awards are rife with bullshit, and that standards are wildly subjective, but some of them can provide useful visibility. Say if a freelancer or a small studio gets work in CA, and they want to take sub-contracted jobs from larger agencies. Those larger agencies are reading or at least glancing through the CA annuals, possibly looking for new talent.
- you're right. i agree that visibility is actually a huge deal. was just reacting to other stuff...stewdio
