Fireworks for web, photoshop for image manipulation

Beyond export capability, I've never really understood what the advantage of Fireworks is? Presumably we're all acutely familiar with the PS environment, so why hobble ourselves with a shoddier, less capable interface?

Photoshop is fucking horrible for laying out websites, anyone who thinks different doesn't know how to use Fireworks.
Fireworks is buggy, slow and the blur filters are poor however.

i think it should be photoshop with fireworks not one or the other. Both together create a good workflow. They both have different uses just read on adobes site the product overview.

Earlier this year I switched from using PS to FW for my comp work. Last month I switched back. FW is too buggy and its virtually impossible to achieve the same effects or even draw things to exact pixel lines. I wanted so bad for FW to be the solution its trying to be but it just doesn't cut it.
- Effects, true; exact placement, false. Perhaps your fills were set to anti-alias or something?blaw
- For example, when resizing a rounded rectangle using the off the shape handle, it does not snap to grid.ninjasavant
- Also, you can't numerically define a corner radius.ninjasavant
- Rectangles start as a shape with a number value for the corner radius. Direct selection of a point changes (irreversibly) the state to a shape with points.blaw
- the state of the object to a vector shape with points, handles, etc.blaw

yeah I like layout with Fireworks... easy to just type in pixel width and all that... Photoshop is better for making those few complex images, and for some reason it exports gradients better... then again, maybe I'm doing something wrong with Fireworks?

I prefer Macromedia® Fireworks® to manipulate my world wide web designs. But I do enjoy Adobe® Photoshop® as well to manipulate my digital photography.

I've used fireworks for years, it's far better than photoshop.

does somebody have an example or two where fireworks is superior to photoshop for layout-work? like unique features, timesavers for specific job scenarios, more comfortable workflow? i wonder if it´s worth getting into, ónly using it for gif-animation so far.

So can anyone answer me - have Fireworks' capabilities (in regard to web optimisation, anyway) sublimated into current versions of Photoshop?

I'm not sure if one is superior than the other for layout etc but I've used FW for years and just feel very comfortable with its workflow. I tend to keep PS for more retouching, image manipulation.
- Saying that though, I much prefer exporting images from FW than PS.Jnr_Madison

It sounds like the bits that people here use FW for, pre-export, I'd use Illustrator and Smart Objects.
I too am genuinely curious about FW's advantages - I just find slightly frustrating to do things in, where I know how to do them in PS.

If you use PS for layout and are happy using it to export images etc, I don't think I would bother learning FW, tbh. I'm sure someone could compile a list of its advantages layout wise, but I think it comes down more to personal choice. This may be different if you work with flash etc.
