Am i the only one going crazy with his dad's computer? I'm on holiday, trying to print a a picture on an A4.... dealing with 50windows suddenly opening ( from shareware/freeware), picasa, paint shop pro trial version etc.... and finally got 1/4 of my picture printed at 400%......

No. I spend about 20% of each trip back to the folks', trying to sort out his bloody computer and tech situation.
Despite years of heated protestation he still seems guided by the illusion that because I use computers all day, I enjoy fixing the fucking things.

^ it's a point of frustration and confusion for the older generation
back in the day if you said you knew cars or if you worked on cars all day, you knew how to fix them. knowledge was measured in skills, trades. nowadays everything is measured by minute, specifics. by any of our parents standards we work on computers should mean that we understand anything "under the hood." when more realistically we all have specialties - you know how to work the windows, i am particulary adept at the radio dials, etc.

Let me guess, a PC running some fucked up version of Microsoft?

they put a roof over your head, they fed you, helped you with your education and put up with your whiny teenage bullshit for long enough for you to have the courtesy to help them out with their computer......
at least that is what I tell myself when my dad asks me crazy "can you fix this thing on my computer questions".
- thats too mature of a road to take. i just kick and scream until snot is streaming out of my face.baseline_shift

I never need to because I have always handed down my computers to my parents and made sure they work perfectly well. My father is a very perceptive man and learns quickly, so he tends to do updates and what not and if something a bit too complicated comes up he tends to phone me and understands things quite well.
The only time I really need to help when I am back home is showing him how to do something rather than 'fixing' the computer. Moral of the story is give your folks a good computer and you dinnae need to worry.

Buy a mac. Not for your dad, for yourself. Ever since I got a mac I can say "I don't know much about Windows".
I hope you're not going to assume mac users are heartless selfish people.

My family computer is prefectly working, sporting XP and firefox.
Forcing my parents (and all the people who were asking me to fix their pc) to use firefox, and thunderbird pretty much fixed all the problems.
The only thing I do now is making sure that there is no spyware and the registry is not messed up.
(but still, my mom was able to download and install MSNto contact me all by herself when skype was down for a couple of days)

I'm so tired of my dads shitty PC laptop, it gives us all a head ache, I told him to buy a mac for his 1st computer as he would find it easier to use, but he went shopping with my sisters bf and he advised him on a piece of shit.
I try Skype with them when I'm away and all I hear is a nasty crackling noise.
Just yesterday I set my parents up with an account on my mac so they can use that from now on when I'm away.

I've started using Remote Desktop to sort out my parent's Macs... just take control and demo stuff and clean up their awful mess.

I get this all the time from family.
If i can help them out I do. If not I politely tell them It's something I can't do and that they'll need to take it in and have a poindexter check it out.

Aye, I got my dad to get a linux-based netbook.
No problems there, either.
tbf, the problems I've had over the last year were generally from old tech not working with Vista - not malware or bad shit.
- although, for xmas and my birthday they gave me calendars from iPhoto of family pictures. not good.kona

Trying to set my parents up with a Skype account so we can video chat almost made me never want to talk to them again. It took about a week of back and fourth tech support and we only did it once.
They also don't know when to update their media player so every movie link I send them they say they can't open it.
The only thing they're good at on the computer is forwarding right wing propaganda emails.

I'll actually visit each of them in two days for the first time in months, there will be some IT maintenance due I suppose.
It's risky business though. My brother who lives away too once visited home for a weekend and went for the usual pub reconnaissance with his old buddies. He came back home quite drunk late at night and decided to fix mom's computer. He was reportedly doing ok until an extension slot cover sprang out like a blade and cut the tip of his nose. He sobered up fast while getting stitches at the emergency room, still has a badass scar...

well, my dad didn't asked for any help, I was only trying to figure out how I could print this damn picture.
This finally took me 30min.....
I've always seen my dad filling his computer with loads of freeware that made the computer running slow as hell -when working-
