When a Client Bites Your Style

I'm currently working on a re-branding of my site. I have had a test version on an off as I'm developing it; I guess one of my clients was "inspired" by it and now they are quickly re-branding their website using very similar elements as myself.
Looking at the two, and comparing though, I'm having a change of heart for my website's design, and I'm more or less looking to re-re-brand myself.
Still, it is frustrating to see this happening. Anyone else have anything to add to this?

I've never done anything remotely of interest to anyone...
- so, no...neue75_bold
- any work I've had, I've lost to India..neue75_bold

Yeah - they even were asking me for ideas on what they could say for marketing speak. I spit-balled something and it was like gold - they just ran with it. The nerve of some people, I suppose.

"they even were asking me for ideas on what they could say for marketing speak"
say you can help, and charge them for your time, simple as.
if a client wanted to pay me for a site design or branding i'd already done for my own use then i'd be selling it to them!- You're now a high end branding consultant.. you should make $250K per year...vaxorcist

I don't understand, they are your client, but they are designing their own website? or they are asking you to copy your self?
- neue75_bold0
so then, you lay claim to the combination of one overly large title followed by 3 lines of poorly typeset copy?
- These are still "rough".YetiMade
- And they didn't start doing it till they said "oh, nice site."YetiMade
- well then, if it's any consolation, you've sold them a lemon..neue75_bold
- Well, what do you suggest I do to "fix" this type?YetiMade
- show us the whole page, too hard to tell from that cropping, but it looks too big, too much contrast in type size..neue75_bold
- Use a ratchet.pylon
- Thanks. I kinda feel the same way. It's just . . . too much. I never said I was fond of it, just annoyed that someone would do something I was doing.YetiMade
- you're right, you didn't say that.. if you want some advice or criticisms at any point, you know where to find us..neue75_bold
- Ha! Thanks. Glad to see others believe in plain speaking too. Anyways, your critiques are helpful :-)YetiMade

No, I don't own the market on negatively-tracked bold helvetica. I'm just annoyed that someone would attempt to do the same thing I was doing --- even if it sucked. It's just the idea of that.
Does that make sense?
- Sure, but welcome to the rest of your life, if this is the industry you're going to stick with.pylon
- Learn to separate your ego from your work. You'll be knocked down, rejected, ripped off, and maybe even praised....pylon
- ....don't let any of it go to your head and you'll be much better off.pylon
- I guess so. I've been designing for 7 years, but only just got into web the past year and a half. First time it's happened to me, personally.YetiMade
- Thanks man. I appreciate it. I try not to, usually :-)YetiMade
- You mean, re-branding for seven years?
;)pylon - Ha. Yeah. I mean . . . that.YetiMade

If its any consolation, I don't see a rip. Its just a big title and text in both cases. One thing though, your clients website kinda looks like a website, you have to at least give them that.
- Yeah. I suppose so man. Well, back to the drafting board. When I have new, I'll sender thru.YetiMade
- plash0
try to sell yours to your clients. since you know he/she likes it and they will yank it
- plash0
you should have sold your mock ups. then you wont feel so bad for giving them the idea.
- nadnerb0
nothing is original
- YetiMade0
Plash: That's not a bad idea. Maybe I will offer. Although, according to some, I'm selling a lemon -- Bad typography, layout, ect. And they are correct about this.
Nadnerb: You're right. All is derivative. Even toothbrushes, coffee cups, bridges, diving suites, airplanes. Everything, everything, everything.

An old boss asked me for a strap line for the company I worked for and I said run with 'While you are pressing the flesh we are touching cloth' he was on the phone to the printer at the time and he asked them to print it and I had to literally scream across the room stop fuck no way did you not know I was joking!!!!!.
- Hahaha! Wow. More and more I notice that people have a hard time just coming up with interesting things to say.YetiMade

Your client is a dick for sure, but you don't own Helvetica, or gradients. Understandably annoying. Just be flattered. They will continue to rip and be unoriginal, you will continue to be creative.
- Nor do I have the market on negatively-tracked helvetica ;-) But you're very correct. Thanks!YetiMade
- well, they didnt even use helvetica, if it makes you feel better.baseline_shift
