Formula Two driver Henry Surtees has passed away in a London hospital after the 18-year-old Briton was struck on the helmet by a flying wheel. The son of former F1 champion John Surtees was knocked unconscious and he and his car crashed straight into the barrier.

Fuck, poor guy. rip

aren't wheels in open-seater racing cars supposed to be tethered to avoid them from flying off like that??
- how do you tether something spinning @ 350km+ ?chris_himself
- this is how: http://www.f1technic…dijitaq

The tethers are designed to withstand about 5000 kg of load, but often they can break quite easily during an accident, especially if the cable gets twisted by the broken suspension members. The teams normally replace the tethers every two or three races to ensure that they can withstand the loads put on them during an accident.

"The tethers have 5000 kg (1 ton) breaking strain, and you can generate forces greater than that, never mind any cutting action," Wright explains. "So under certain circumstances they are going to fail, and there's not much you can do about that. If you trap a wheel against a barrier or something, and then drag it, you are basically not going to stop the car from tearing it off itself.

So unlucky. RIP Henry. Condolences to his family.

RIP Henry, horrible accident.

So unlucky. You can see the force is immense. The tyre seems to be bouncing quite slowly then ricochets off very quickly immediately after it hits him. Saving grace I guess is that he never would have seen it coming.

Jeeze. Looked so innocuous at first. Poor bugger.
