apparently it was put on fire by man in the early 70's to avoid escape of poisonous gas. due to too much gas drilling in the area part of the surface collapsed, making gas escape..
it's just a big stove..

Cool photos. Anybody ever see the town that is perpetually on fire in PA. an old coal-mining town - apprarently there was an underground fire and it's been burning for years now. nobody can live there anymore - smoke rising from the ground. Trying to remember the name of it.
