Hi all,
Anyone know how to hide the fill for a shape but keep the outer glow attached to it? Currently, if I remove the fill it removes the outer glow, which you would expect. But, am creating a PNG that has the shape fill transparent but the outer glow visible.
Probably something simple (hopefully)
Thanks

you have to make a bigger box, then set crop marks. then go "save for web and choose PNG.

make fill same color as the background. if you want it transparent, you will have to use photoshop, set the fill to 0% and the "layer masks effect" check box to on in the outerglow effects pane.
- yeah, hoping for a similar method to what I would do in PS, as you say whack fill down, needs to be in AI thoughiamjustoneman

you sure?

yes.

how about take off the glow and then bring it to photoshop where you make a new glow.

cheers for the help so far, needs to be in illy, will use PS as a last resort, can't believe this can't be done in illy.
- did you try my 1st answer.akrokdesign
- will try it now, never used crop marks believe it or not, better see where it is.iamjustoneman
- i think this only applies if the glow is getting cut off on the save fro web preview.johndiggity

sorry – akrokdesign I don't understand, can I send you a file?
- iamjustoneman0
crop marks did nothing for me.

why do you need to keep it in illustrator? can you do it in ps and place it back in the illy file? fireworks?
- iamjustoneman0
ok, just done my whole site in illy, seems pointless jumping into photoshop for something that should be simple, guess if its not possible then I will have too.

hmmm.....I don't think what you're asking can be done.
Do you need to fill the object?
A stroke alone can have an outer glow. Or do you need the outer glow to be on the OUTSIDE of the object only?I think make the object the same colr as the background if that is an option.....other than that....Photoshop

you'll have to put the site together with html right? what's so bad about making an image in photoshop and importing into the illy layout? it's all got to get sliced up anyway.
- i totally understand, more curious than anything. I have everything in illy, just wanted to know if it could be done or done with a workaround in illy.iamjustoneman

Basically, I need the button 'fill' to be transparent, I have attached an outer glow to the button, which looks great, but I need to remove the fill. I don't mind if the outer glow sits inside or outside the shape, if inside (it is currently outside), I can just make the shape a few pixels bigger to match the dimensions of how it is currently.

came up with workaround, if I attach the outer glow to the stroke, not the fill, then set the stroke to the same colour as the glow, then it kind of bleeds in.
Not ideal but hey, will probably open PS now :)

set the fill to multiply? is there something under it in the layout?
- iamjustoneman0
nothing underneth, alpha transparency

You could also make a compound path which is slighlty smaller than the original button. This will however put the outer glow on the inside as well as the outside.

I'm with JohnDiggity here - just finish it off in Photoshop - you can bring in all your Illy assets as smart objects. imho, you should *always* finish off a site in PS (in fact, probably do the 'last 60%' of the design in it), as it's closer to output format and a lot, lot less of a ballache to do fiddly little bitmap-centric details.

Reduce it to the stroke of the shape, apply outer glow, go to appearance tab, select the stroke, then the opacity of the stroke, set it to 0%, you will still have the outer glow.

got it!
give your object a glow/blur.
duplicate the object.
draw a MASSIVE shape, and puch the second version out using pathfinder>divide
select both and hit crtl+7
ba da bing!
