Dishwasher installation 1818 Responses

I'm moving into an apartment with a decent sized kitchen. There currently isn't a dishwasher.
I want to buy a dishwasher and have it installed. There are currently cabinets built in that would have to be removed to make space for the dishwasher.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is it a super pain in the ass? Should I forget it? How much would the installation cost?

I just found out about portable dishwashers. They don't need to be installed into a cabinet.

My biggest problem with my current apartment is that the dishes are such a pain. I love cooking. I hate scrubbing dishes.
I think machines should clean dishes.

only 2 things to consider-
1. make sure you have an outlet nearby, you will need to wire the DW up.
2. it needs to drain, so, it is easiest of you have a garbage disposal in the sink already, if not, you can still do it, but it is a little harder.otherwise, it is really easy. just 3 screws and some adjustments to the feets.

Plumbing can be quite a job, depending on how the underside of the sink was setup, and how old the building is. The dishwasher is the easy part, making sure the drain doesn't put too much pressure on old pipes is the worry, if you have old pipes, I'd seriously consider a plumber...

There are tons of home improvement resources on the Web about this subject. Find a reputable one and read through the steps three or four times. If it seems inline with your skillset, hit the hardware store and do it.
I don't know how comfortable you are with this type of stuff, but it's really not a big deal if you are moderately handy. I'd be happy to weigh in if you have specific questions.

1. Are you renting this place? If yes you're doing work to improve someone else's property. Your landlord probably doesn't want you to do it either.
2. They make dishwashers on wheels that have an adapter you hook up to the kitchen faucet. That way no installation, and you can take it with you when you move.

I certainly don't use 11-14 gallons of water when dish washing, thats 53 litres, not even close.. max 20 I'd say for a few days pots/pans, and yes dishwash powder is a skin irritant, and contains phosphates (banned from clothes washing machine powder), as they cause an increase in algal blooms.

just hire an illegal alien to do your dishes. For a dollar more per day they'll probably be your butler as well.

@flashbender, maybe your right. I could probably get a maid to come by every 2 weeks or so. Wonder what the going rate for that is in downtown NYC.

yeah like said before, if you're not buying this apt and just renting then you should talk to the landlord first. I can't imagine paying for a dishwasher & the hassle of installing it, or paying someone to install it If in a year or so you're gonna move and leave it there. Unless your landlord gives you a month free rent for it.
