enter the model number on this page and it will tell you the panel type. S-IPS and the newer H-IPS have the best color and viewing angle.

Better than Apple's, in my opinion (not as attractive unfortunately):

yes, a PVA panel like the LaCie 324 will have better black levels, it will however suffer from color shift and contrast variance depending on the viewing angle, as is characteristic of PVA panel types.
I would suggest reading up on panel types, S-IPS, H-IPS, S-PVA, MVA, TN. each has advantages and drawbacks.

I have the Dell Ultrasharp linked by v3, but I have to warn (in case it's not assumed) about their customer service being poor, and if something goes wrong with the monitor don't expect much to be done about it. I'm sure this is similar with a lot of similar large corporations that train customer service employees to respond by the book or pass on to the next department, but it still annoys me.
Keeping track of the numbers I kept being referred to after a simple question was misunderstood, I was thrown in a loop of the same sequence of numbers more than once. 2 hours later... learned a hard lesson about Dell's shitty service. Should've known better!
Go with samsung if you don't have the budget for a higher priced one.

Have an HP LP2475W at the moment. Can't say anything bad about it.

don't buy it cash, better to have a credit card to back it up. if the seller act like a asshole, you can "most of the times" back it up with your credit card company.
