Any Blender users out there? The new UI and features for 2.5 (coming soon-ish) look amazing! I may finally commit the time and effort to learning 3D when this comes out as they've fixed so many of the interface issues and reorganized things to be more intuitive.

I use it and should upgrade, I'm still on 2.46 . Defintely needs to be more intuitive.

v2.5 is outstanding. any reservations about blender's useability are almost completely gone.

I used the previous version a fair bit and really liked it .. took a while to get the interface but it's really powerful. Lots of very high end features.

    Looking forward to 2.5

It has the timeline right at the bottom by default...awesome... like After Effects... it's easy to find layers and materials for objects on the right, and the whole column scrolls very nicely.

This is something that really compete with Maya... one of the complaints animators have with Cinema4d is that it has no dope sheet. Blender has one.

    • also render tools are super easy to find...right column...SigDesign1/2
cinema has had a dopesheet since version 10.M_C_P2/2

Seems like it's going to be a major improvement. Quite amazing considering it's an alpha version.

I reckon UI design for a program like this probably one of the most complicated and difficult tasks a team of UI designers could ever face.

I guess with difficult tasks like this, the view from the ground (micro) need to be assessed; but the view from above (macro) needs to be considered too .. at the moment, my main criticism would be the higher level structure to the interface isn't quite as clear as it could be (i.e. which panel's associated with which stage of the 3D workflow).

Seems like a lot of thought has been put into the new style of UI widget - much more up to date and much nicer to use. Only criticism of these UI elements as they stand would be that they all seem quite similar .. e.g. I thought it was quite difficult to differentiate between a slider and button at a glance.

Huge improvement though. which I guess is only going to get better. Pretty exciting stuff.

    • what's really interesting though is that if you just start clicking around you discover things quicklySigDesign1/2

i tried blender for the first time 3 months ago, it was the first 3D app i ever tried. i outright hated the UI, it was insane. i have then tried Modo, as the UI was perfect.. or for me it was.

this new blender looks very similar to Modo as it has the same features as Modo now in its UI.

its free, but still isnt selling me.. or that vimeo link that narrator was just selling me against using it.

i guess for those that use it now, this new UI will greatly serve them in ultimate ways, a great advancement.

id love to see growth from artists who use this and hopefully it will become a leader in the 3D app world over being a not wanted app due to crap UI.

    @PIZZA;

It's an alpha release .. which means it's not even really meant for general testing yet.

These days, shitty user interfaces aren't a usual occurrence in linux.

For the record, this is the same view you reference - but this screenshot was taken actually using ubuntu (linux):

    • Yeah I downloaded it and noticed they'd actually fixed that.
And yeah Linux is starting to look better but the feel of the OS is still poor when you interact with it. Lots of tearing and glitches when you drag elements.

If you've got tearing or glitches, that won't be typical of all users - but definitely more work involved in getting linux working well.lukus_W4/7
well. Pretty rock solid once it is working though.lukus_W5/7

I am a serious Blender user but have decided to wait for the actual release of 2.5 since I cannot afford to lose work to bugs. It does look really great but I have to admit a slight bit of sadness because I have become very fast with 2.49b and I know I have to relearn the interface so my speed with go down for a time.

But overall, Blender is just awesome. When I can, I will be giving back to the community for providing such an amazing tool for free.

    • Looks like a lot of the shortcuts are the same though .. don't be too worried. UI seems highly customisable.lukus_W1/2
yeah. im not too worried. as long as Blender is there, im happytwokids2/2

One thing I've always wondered, is why they set the orbit style to 'trackball' by default. How many people actually own a trackball these days??

The simple act of changing this to 'turntable' by default would make life so much easier for new users.

    • for me, I like the trackball movement. you have a lot more control over what you see.twokids1/4
but youcan easily change the default to turntabletwokids2/4
I find it impossible to orbit around one plane with that mode ..lukus_W3/4
In Alpha 0 they didn't have the option in the settings, really weirded me out but trackball is cool sometimes...rounce4/4
