the Jessica Hische piece above does have some type (Coquette by Mark Simonson) below the main lettering. But the fact that it's letterpressed doesn't change the fact that Jessica created this, and did not simply modify a font.
To clarify what Stephen said, LetterCult is not a site solely about 'hand-lettering', the way the book Hand Job is a book about hand-lettering.
It's more about all the different ways that people express Custom Letters -- hand-lettering is one way. For example, there are plenty of original type designs that we've highlighted and these are not examples of hand-lettering.
Digital lettering ... sign painting ... type design ... stone carving ... paper sculpture ... Custom Letters built from scratch.

There is a difference between, illustrative type vs type set.

What he means is, this is all lettering, type is made with typefaces.

- It would be pretty rad if it was, but it is not. Lettercult is all about hand lettering.Typographica
- That looks like letterpress to me, are you saying this was custom cut in wood for the job, and not lead?NONEIS
- The swirls could easily be accents and dings...NONEIS
- Either way, it's nice ;DNONEIS

OK then. Thanks for the correction, I guess.
Now, does anyone actually have an opinion that some of these are designed well regardless of the nomenclature?
- Or I suppose that is too much to ask of QBN.duckofrubber
