    Hi all,

I am starting to use an iPhone for the first time, just wondering what is the best method for retrieving my emails, I have rules, folders etc. on my desktop version of apple mail, which i have been managing for a good few years now. If possible, I would like to have these rules setup on my iPhone version of mail, what is the best bethod for this?

I took a quick look at mobileMe, but couldn't see my rules etc.

You are going to have a tough time with just the iPhone mail app. I can not figure out even how to create a new folder to dump emails in. I really don't think it is that advanced. I simply use it as notification (filter). When I get home it dumps all my emails that I did not delete into my home mail. good stuff.

    • I think all the folder creation has to be done on desktop, iPhone just mirrors itribit
    • On the device itself. You can not create a blank folder. ugh. 4.0dibec

All that stuff is synced through iTunes (see the Info tab). You can sync Mail account settings, Calendars, Contacts, etc through iTunes, (but some of these are done over the air if you use MobileMe).

    • (so Rules will be synced as part of account settings)ribit

i finally got mail to start working again. just moved out of the house so my new internet access is, well, more forgiving then the old system. i've just been using gmail.com up until now, and to be honest i dont think im all that fond of mail anymore. i really like the color coding that gmail has, and like to see all of my emails in my inbox. whereas with mail on osx they are sent to seperate folders via rules.

does anybody know if you can color code or "tag" similar to gmails service?

as for the iphone, i too just use it as a filter or notification device. organizing emails on it doesn't work all that well. hopefully apple will update it in the future.

I found the best way to operate for me is to access my account via IMAP protocol (rather than POP3), both on my computer and the iPhone. This ensures every device has the same mail/folder structure and content.

I use Google Apps Gmail version, it lets you hook up your domains directly to the account (and administer the domain for email from there, with multiple accounts).

    www.google.com/a

I set most rules via Gmail interface, so when emails reach my computer or phone, they're already sorted. However, if I move an email to another tag/folder - whether on iPhone, Mac or webmail - it is reflected on the server and subsequently on each device - that's the beauty of IMAP.
I wouldn't bother updating through iTunes, seems too complicated. When I launch Mail on the iPhone it is updated instantly, because the server reflects every change I made to mail on my computer.

I'm still looking for a good app to replace Mail.app on the Mac though, one that utilizes Gmail to full extent - with colouring and so on.

    • definitely IMAP! (POP is so last century)ribit
