i dont understand the big deal of xhtml. was looking into it and it looked primarily like a cleaner markup with the closing of tags. i dont do web too much lately but try to stay educated so what is truly different besides a little cleaner markup?

Browser compatibility is up to you : )
Firefox ...
#sidebar {
/*overflow:auto;
float:left;*/
position: absolute;
left: 589px;
width:160px;
height: 800px;
background-image:url(images/side...
background-repeat:repeat-y;
margin-left:41px;
padding-top:5px;
padding-left:24px;
}

Try this new margin for now...
#sidebar {
margin:-422px 0 0 41px;
}

Place your sidebar directly inside your 'block_inside' and apple this:
<style type="text/css">
#sidebar {
float:right;
width:160px;
height: 800px;
background-image:url(images/side...
background-repeat:repeat-y;
margin-right:21px;
padding-top:5px;
padding-left:21px;
}</style>

I meant APPLY not apple :)
so your code should look like this:
<div id="block_featured" class="block">
<span class="block_inside">
<div id="sidebar">
<div class="search"><img src="/images/search.jpg" alt="" /></div>
<div class="line2"><img src="/images/line2.jpg" alt="" /></div>
<h2>Categories</h2>
<small>January</small>
<div class="line2"><img src="/images/line2.jpg" alt="" /></div>
<h2>Archive</h2>
<small>January</small>
<div class="line2"><img src="/images/line2.jpg" alt="" /></div>
<h2>Contribute</h2>
<small>If you have something to contribute to KeepCup email us here.</small>
<h2>This works fine</h2>
</div><div class="post">
