ok the brief is for a company that makes steel fireproof stuff... better than wood, plasterboard and blockwork... blah blah
my boss normally does the retouching but they've let me have a go so have a look and give me some helpful hints, tips and suggestions.
thanks mucho

- LOL i have been fucking about alot on here today. yes shitloads thoWeLoveNoise
- WeLoveNoise0
first thing i notice is that everything has abit of a 3d looks to apart from 4
- is steel meant to be shiny by the way ?WeLoveNoise
- the number 4? yeah it's not a milled steel its some kinda coated stuffedsplace
- edsplace0
yeah 3 is supposed to be thick brick and 4 is the product which is really thin... any ideas on how to get flames to interact or maybe a heat haze kinda effect?
- copy the background layer over the numbers, and erase most of it. also, try overlaying a little orange.baseline_shift
- iheartfun0
I know they are all suppose to look like they have been set on fire but I would make the three look a little bit more like brick (color wise)
What is the 2?
- edsplace0
2 is plasterboard or drywall depending on which side of the atlantic you're on... yeah the 3 was grey'er but with the 2 the 4 and the floor being greay it all looked very erm....grey!
- iheartfun0
put more contrast in there.... as for the haze... hmmm not sure you'll have to play around with masking each number maybe?
- pressplay0
the numbers are reflected by the floor – the fire isn't – why?
- monospaced0
If there really were pieces of metal in front of a raging fire, they would look significantly more back lit. Try darkening the numbers up, get rid of that HORRENDOUS orange gradient, learn how reflections actually work, and fix up your clipping paths.

maybe you should add little flames to the numbers (at least to the wooden one)...

I'm trying to think of something positive to say.
I do have a couple of suggestions - ditch the bloody mirror floor and replace with something matte black. Then you can have a subtle, none-too accurate 'heat reflection' glow emanating from the back.
I'd probably crop to the lower 60% as well - too much wasted space up top (unless that's an editorial decision, of course).
It's a shame you've used the type of flames you have - if you'd used more typical licks of flame, you could have reduced the distance to the horizon and had the occasional lick around parts of the numerals, increasing the sense of depth.
- I'm fairly sure that type of fire is photographed from the bottom up - not front on. I might be wrong.Nairn

Also - the jet black floor would allow you to do some subtle shading hints around the foot of the numerals, like a shadow on shadow.

Its crap on 1, 2, 3, 4 different levels.
Hire a pro.
sorry
