I'm looking for an easy to implement, light weight, designer friendly, open-source / free CMS. Something based on PHP MySQL is ideal. Thanks for you suggestions!

Millions of CMS's.... need more specifics about how you'll use it... if in doubt, wordpress..... textpattern is designer-friendly too... drupal is an acquired taste.... I'm testing concrete5, and used to build my own in the past due to unique client requirements... NOTE: Don't just make photoshop screenshots and think they'll easily translate to the CMS, try the CMS alot first, so you design something the CMS can work with...

- I deal with this all the damn time. Currently ExpressionEngine is giving me the business.welded

I was gonna say framework or Drupal but then read "easy, lightweight, etc"... sooo, Wordpress is pretty damn standard but I'll throw a +1 to snews too because I tried it out and it worked well.
- Really? Good to hear. I like it alot for small-medium sized things. Fun to work with.TheBlueOne
- Yeah, you had posted it before so I gave it a spin and liked it. Easy to mess around with.ismith

your favorite CMS will wind up being the one you're most comfortable with, even if it isn't the best.
For me that is WordPress. What I really like about wordpress is the extensive documentation. I can do pretty much anything I need to with it if I'm willing to do a little research.

My favourite is ExpressionEngine. The learning curve is pretty punchy, and you do have to pay for the full version, but it's extremely powerful.
I found Wordpress pretty limiting from the outset, though I'm sure you can expand it with a tonne of plugins etc.
- EE is the gold standard IMHOTheBlueOne
- Only thing I can't stand is the template system.ismith

WordPress. Building this site for a Dance School as we speak (type). I'm using a system called "Grid Focus", though I've heavily edited the CSS and some of the php. I love it. It's a rush job so I've got some clean-up to do but...

without the flash entry page can be betterSalarrue

Have been using squarespace and LOVE it.
would be interested to see how expression engine stacks up?
- <-- Not Free, but if your time is money (which it is) then I say it's well worth it.gron
- I don't like the whole remote hosting thing...TheBlueOne
- so far I've found the hosting experience better than my dreamhost so it doesn't trouble me in the leastgron
- Cmon.. a monthly fee for a CMS. LOLfbeauvais

I've used ExpressionEngine in the past and I love it, easy to learn and very powerful. However you have to pay 100$ for the full version and some of the cool plug-ins you have to pay for.
I also like wordpress and if you know your stuff you can build some amazing sites using a some extra plug-ins all for free.
Take a look at http://php.opensourcecms.com/scr… they have a ton of CMS that you can try. But remember to get a CMS that has a good forum community just in case you need support or help with your code.
Good luck

To date I've mainly used Textpattern and Wordpress. I prefer Textpattern for it's versatility, but Wordpress has a superior Admin interface and image/media handling capabilities. I found Textpattern a little tough to grasp at first, but that might just be because I had never worked with a CMS before. I'm currently looking for a CMS that can handle big jobs... so Drupal or EE.
As mentioned previously, it ultimately comes down to what you're comfortable with. Whatever gets the job done and doesn't have you tearing your hair out.

Squarespace does look pretty amazing but I'm with TheBlueOne on not liking remote hosting.
- as I just said above: <-- Not Free, but if your time is money (which it is) then I say it's well worth it.

Cushycms is pretty neat. Clever concept for making sections editable

Oh, and I have steered clear of Joomla after it was not allowed in one of my client's guidelines for 'security' issues... Not sure of the details, however, so read up before you go for that one.

thanks for all the replies, I have been checking them out. Also started playing with MODx (http://modxcms.com/). The install and back-end admin are pretty straight forward, we will see how the theme creation goes.
- No. Back away from the MODxTheBlueOne
- Reasons? I've never used it myself but a friend of mine is bout it bout it.bort
