I'm by no means a pro, so not sure what I need here. I have a 450D. I need a decent lens for capturing a head-to-toe kind of fashion shoot situation (without breaking the bank). I presently only have a 50mm portrait lens, which is clearly not right.

i don't know your bank

the deal is anything under 50mm is going to distort the image , you need something to flatten the subject, hence the 85mm, so you'll need the distance between you and your subject the L is for quality glass, "fashion appearance" will require lighting/makeup for the desired effect, if not, just really nice pics

you will notice the difference though, i love my L glass and I'm sure others will tell you the same

what kind of distance? it seems like i have to get miles away as it is to fit the whole subject.
- akrokdesign0
is lower numbers for closer? ex. 70mm vs. 300mm
- closer as in distance.akrokdesign
- Higher number is more magnification, so 300 is for standing much farther away.ismith
- thanks.akrokdesign

approx 13-14 feet
- version30
300mm... you'd have to be 48 ft away from a 6 ft tall person to fit them in the frame
- version30
oh wait, i think i've been lying to you, my numbers are all off if the 450 isn't a full frame camera
- version30
80 ft for the 300
23 ft for the 85
what are you not liking about your results from the 50mm?
- airey0
wouldn't he need a wide angle convertor to fit the whole subject in the shot?
- version30
because right now your 50mm is approx. 80mm as it is so the "approx 13-14 feet" should be your current distance to the subject, no?

what camera do you have V3? Do you have the new MKII?
- acescence0
it just doesn't look sharp at that distance. i guess it's just not great glass, barely a step up from the kit lens.

mo, i use the MKI 5D, i looked at the MKII but 12 min of shooting time before the sensor gets hot, freezing during panning, etc makes for quite significant investment for somewhat entertaining results
- really? Is that a common problem with the new ones?morilla
- yes, I'm not touching that thing until gen 3 probably, for now i'll use a vid cam for vid, ya know?version3
- damn, thanks for the tip. Everyone is jumping on that thing, but I think it's cause of the vid.morilla
- maybe I'll go with the MKImorilla
- highly recommended, seeing as which the price dropped nearly a grand 9 moths after i bought mine, fuckersversion3

ace, if you can FLOOOOD the area with light, bump your fstop up to 5.6 or 8. it results in longer shutters, but a wider depth of field, and keep your ISO at 100, L if you've got it
- version30
ace, this may help for your paid projects or your own research/experimentation

he's local to me and always been very cool quick to help, there are others out there but i'll hype him because he's always done me good

I believe the MKII can produce great vid and if wasn't for the saner side of rabbitwerks I may have bought it, his video needs far outweigh mine and while it is capable of producing gorgeous video, it still has drawbacks that a videographer shouldn't have to put up with.
Mo, you know of the NIN mkII vid right? even that with slow smooth hand pans, the freezing/jumping is quite evident.

Yeah, I watched a couple of those vids. He ( Rob Sheridan ) came out and shot a song 2 weeks ago when they played here. He was barely moving, it was like watching someone in slow motion.
I saw this yesterday, but basically it is just dead on shots. Still looks good though. But you can see the limitations with the vid capabilities in that camera.

Head to toe? 450D?
35mm or 28mm. You and your model can be inside a fridge and can still get a head to toe shot with these lenses. ( i keed of course..but buy these lens)
- version30
i own the 16-35L and a 28mm 1.8, neither of which i would say are suitable for said wants, my 50 1.4, but just maybe, but I rent (as mentioned earlier) for anything that matters, hell i shoot food with a 100mm
