will we have a flash-free youtube one day?
- applepirate0
flash free youtube maybe....
because of the HTML5 3D rendering probably not. it's not a video playback utility.

Breaking: VRML has returned!
- airey0
if it's not flash it'll be some other extension and by the time that exists either flash or silverlight will hopefully be faster and less buggy, or another something will be the rage/contentious issue, so it won't matter.
- Actually no... HTML 5 video tag is coming http://www.html5code…ukit
- Correction, already here.rounce

i'd be more hopeful of better quality and content in the video itself. i couldn't care less about the delivery mechanism. to worry more about how it gets served than what is getting served seems the wrong way to look at things. to me obviously.

check the page source on the page. not talking about the video itself, there is no flash plugin playing the vid on that page, it's html5 video object
- That's interesting. IE compliance? Does it work on Firefox? Safari looked fine.itsmitch
- holy shit! i had to right click on the video to believe it... but DAMN that shit aint flash.... wow.applepirate
- of course no IE, just safari and FF nowacescence
- with plug in download, not nativeBattleAxe

Everything we've learned about HCI/Usability since the Internet was born has shown us time-and-time again that people want the quickest access to information possible. They don't want to fly around in some virtual world that looks like SecondLife just to find a video clip or read the news. This will fail because it won't be useful enough to gain enough of an audience to pay for the development time to learn this new language and develop something with it.
- airey0
yeah it's cool.
- airey0
thanks for the link though man, it is pretty damn amazing to me.
it does have that hallmark of VRML though and man o man was that a waste of time. the next big thing than never happened. i had to sit through countless monologues from a friend's brother in law in about '97 banging on about VRML and the 'future of the web'. fuck it killed me. we only went to see him as he had 4 PC's networked and wanted to play warcraft 2 networked lol!

I just noticed that a lot of the buttons don't work on this (Safari 4/Leopard) ... no full screen, no HD, etc.
- im guessing its because those buttons are made for the flash embed vid's and this is using html5 video object??applepirate
- airey0
hey acenscence, could you develop for this?
- acescence0
html5 is probably still a couple years off from being supported well enough to use it :(
- BattleAxe0
as long as you have to download and install something good luck
- for the avg usersBattleAxe
- that's the point, you don't, it's native video playback in the browseracescence
- playback of what kind of video tho? it has to be a .mov,.wmv, .avi, .flv... something?!?applepirate

I heard they weren't even planning on finishing the HTML 5 spec until after 2020. I don't even think the Internet itself took that long to develop. If you've looked at the companies behind the W3C you'd understand why: locking Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, etc. in a room and telling them to come up with a spec as a group is kind of retarded and they all just ignore it when they develop their own shit anyway.
- nobody's cared much about the 4.2 spec, least of all microsoft so it may as well happen now.airey
- acescence0
well, there is a draft spec which will largely not change. webkit and mozilla implement a lot of it already.

VERY NICE!
Already the scrubbing kicks the fucking shit out of Flash. Also rollover the little video thumbs on the right, FUCK YES!

Will Idealism be Firefox's Downfall?
http://bit.ly/5krI9z(via readwriteweb.com)
- Open-source _HAS_ to stick to it's principles - otherwise there's no alternative to commercialism.lukus_W
- agreed 100%.fugged
- Agreed, not that there is sth wrong with commercialism. Actually, open source is very capitalist in its nature.raf
- Very true - open source preserves freedoms for majority though.. in a way that straight-commerciali... doesn't.lukus_W
