"what would a designer do"
I'm curious to get some perspectives here on an issue that has come up.
I recently worked on a project that used istock photos that was purchased by our marketing department for use in a major local campaign.
The printer that I used to do the work that I did is calling me asking for me to re-send one of the images so that they can use it in their nephew's soccer team banner. <?>
First of all, I know that a legitimate printer wouldn't do that.
But I've used these folks for years because they are specialized in what they do and they for the most part get the job done, although not always as spec'd.
I'm not comfortable giving them the image again...(they're so disorganized that they lost the disc with the image on it), and i know that he will have a hissy fit if i say no.
I know the chances of being caught are slim but I feel they would be the type rat me out to save their ass.
how should i tell him that I can't do that.

Tell them that either:
a: The image is copyrighted to the client and not to you so you can't send them on to the printer.b: You have cleared out your archive and no longer have the image
c: The image is copyrighted, you no longer have it but its cheap as chips anyway cos its on istock and is you kid not worth the $20 it costs? What are you some kind of cheap bastard, cmon!

You say no, that is illegal. If they whine and cry, then you wonder why you continue to work with them when there are TONS of solid printers out there that understand what copyright means.

Tell a while lie - you've lost the original image, but that it's available on istock photos. It's not worth making a point over.. just let it pass.

It's simple - just give him a direct link to the photo on istock. Recommend which size to buy.
Assuming you're not the owner of the design company, you don't have ANY ownership rights to the artwork of the company or its clients. In other words, you can get in big trouble. Don't fuck around when it's your job.

time to switch printers. If he's that cavalier about image rights, you can guess what else they may be doing?!?
- you're suggesting that the printer is a terrorist?shitehawke

thanks all.
I'm gonna tell them truth that it's illegal you cheap bastard and send them a link to the istock photo.this is the same guy that became so defensive when I suggested to them to setup an FTP site so that their clients can easliy send files. He acted like i told him walk naked through a mall. ridiculous!
- Sounds like you should find a new printer and see how he reacts to that.Andrew_D
