Gmail doesn't use folders, it uses labels. It keeps emails in "All mail" folder and their copies under every label (represented in Mail as folders). As a result labeled messages are kept in two places in your computer ("all mail" folder and "label" folders).
This is true if you're using IMAP, not sure about pop3.

you got your answer in the first response, use IMAP, don't store messages locally.

Seems like since I synced Mail App with gmail, ive dropped about 3GB of HDD space. and I seem to be losing more space every day.
Is there any way to not have the emails stored on my computer? So I can keep my HDD space?

If you use gmail using the built in Apple Mail program, are the emails downloaded and saved on your local hard drive?
Just wondering if I use Mail, gmail will take up my HD space.
