Lately, I've been really trying to learn about classical music, and I thought I would share with you my discoveries (with itunes links). Allow me to take your jaded souls on a musical voyage— set aside your coke-addled booty bass, your post-punk nihilism, and come with me, away from Photoshop, away from blinding vectors and hexidecimal madness. We can fly away above the clouds to cannonball's magical kingdom of music.
Patrick Cassidy's "Vide Cor Meum" (conducted by Hans Zimmer)

Some of you might remember this from the movies "Hannibal" and "Kingdom of Heaven". On it's own, this piece is stunningly beautiful, as are it's lyrics (http://hannibal.hannotations.co... If you like this, he cut an album with that chick from Dead Can Dance. Check it out.Alan Hovhaness' Symphony No. 2, Op. 132 "Mysterious Mountain" (conducted by John Williams)

Reverant, noble melody is this symphony's trademark, invoking the bold majesty of mountain peaks. LIsten, and look out your window.Heitor Villa-Lobos: The Complete Solo Guitar Music (Fabio Zanon)

One of Brazil's more most prodigious exports, Villa-Lobos was renowned for his guitar compositions as well as his symphonies. I first heard this in a NYC cab ride one spring day long ago. It's perfect siesta music.Ravi Shankar: The Sounds of India

Yes, this is Indian classical music, and one of his earlier works, introducing the listener to the scale of the raga, how Indian music is composed, etc. I've been reading Shantaram in my Eames lounger and looping this over the headphones in the late hours.Saint-Saens: Danse Macabre (Dutoit)

One of the OG classical goth albums, back when it was socially acceptable to wear corsets in public, and Edward-Gorey style characters roamed the streets... and stuff...Below are links to previous issues. As always, please contribute your own recommendations if you have any.

Kudos to cannonball for posting a classical thread. I went to school for composition and conducting, so this is sort of a ground zero for me.
All good stuff.

Quamb,
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm digging the Yann Tiersen. You might like Toru Takemitsu's stuff.

He's done a whole bunch of film stuff (and has a piece on that mystery mountain joint). A lot of people recognize him as the top dog for 20th century Japanese composers. Not as uplifting as Tiersen... more suspenseful and discordant.

Check out Joanna McGregor - "Play" is an outstanding album that anyone can get into - a mixture of baroque and modern classical piano music.
