It's a shame so few people try to make a realistic, honest show. Why is it easier to create scripts where people seem phony and over the top?
This show will hold up except for the technology. Text messages were new technology in the show.
- Right? And McNulty always uses a pay phone.. FFS!!!

Have my home-made Wire ringtone, it's great for text messages.
Merry Christmas!

The Wire has been re-formatted and re-wired in 16x9 Full frame HD.

Well apparently Obama is a big fan of the show - and has even said Omar is his favorite character:)

Its interesting that in this past decade you have TV taken to new levels of artistry even at the same time the film industry churned out some less than stellar product. But I'd say one edge The Wire has over other great shows is simply the familiarity with the subject matter the show's creator brought to it, given that he worked as a reporter in Baltimore for a decade.
- You can't really make up stuff like this, it has to come from some kind of real-life experience.abettertomorrow

I watched the wire in about a month .. often one episode after another. I haven't seen a TV program that was so engrossing.
Why is it so good? I reckon it's largely because of the characters .. when I watched it, I could understand (and relate to) their motivation. Nothing is simple .. and this show doesn't try to spread the myth. Life is a complicated mess - even when it's segmented into five neat themes.
The big watershed moment for me, was the realisation that in politics - there's no big controller. No one person is crafting our world or controlling us all from the top down. The political machine is a huge shape-shifting amorphous animal .. incentives drive people, and circumstances dictate direction.
I'm not sure what kind of conclusions can be drawn from the series - but I sure as hell wish a lot of the people in charge were required to watch and understand the motivation that drives a lot of the people who happen to exist below or around the poverty line.

I never got round to watching season 5 - may have to start from the beginning and go all the way through... once I finish Dexter season 5.

Currently re-watching entire series.

And the guy that plays Stringer Bell has been a bad guy in a couple of British films too... I dunno whether he's originally British or not... his gangster accent is toooo convincing...
- yep, he's a Londoner innit.phixion
- from Pecknarm!
His face is on a wall with Noel Clarke and a bunch of others near the library.orrinward - He co-produced one of Jay-Z albums apparently.abettertomorrow

I hadn't noticed it. Girlfriend pointed out he was English and I no longer here American, just an Englishman that has been mildly tranquilised.

hahaha - Anyone else notice that the guy who plays McNulty occasionally lapses into a British accent?
He does a decent job at a Baltimore accent but I guess you can't fake stuff like that entirely.

After finishing seasons 1-2 on HBO I watched seasons 3,4, & 5 over Christmas break. Best show in my opinion. Bodie was one of my favorite characters.
I love how Omar was kinda bummed that someone dropped a bag of drugs out the window for him just because he stopped to smoke a cig while in his PJs.

IMDB rating says it all

Rated higher than The Godfather and all those classic films.

I had my doubts. Everyone had been telling me it's the best show ever. The first episode drew me in a bit but my impression was that I would enjoy it, but that was all.
I've finished season 4. I watched 1-3 with the missus (she's seen it before) then she went away for a week and I couldn't help but watch 4. I now have to watch 4 again with her as I can't tell her I've seen it, then I'll be powering through 5.
This is without doubt the best TV show I have ever seen. Probably the most gripping piece of entertainment I've seen too. It can't really be described in anything other than superlatives, and I don't know anyone that has watched it and thought little of it.

- just wait until you see the train wreck that is season 5. you'll change your mind about it.betelgeuse
- You can forgive season 5 because of the genius before it, and for the closure in the last episode.MrT
- Season 4 was the best I've seen so far. If season 5 is a let down in comparison it'll still be amazing I'm sure.orrinward

DirecTV is showing all the seasons on The 101...
it's a channel exclusively on DirecTV.
I always stop to watch for a few minutes.

around 1:59, the "lie detector"
probably one of my fave scenes from the wire

Yeah I am in the middle of Season 2 currently...it is a great storyline, I think my favorite character is the Union boss' perpetual loser son:)
I also like the fact that the main character McNulty (to the extent that there is one), is pretty much the same "bad ass good guy" archetype you see in every crime movie...yet in this series, he ends up getting demoted and shat on by the police dept.

Wait till you get to season 2. One of my favorites.
