"Six months ago, Ramon Villanueva was earning $50,000 a year...now he is making $8 an hour operating the Frog Bog game on the Seaside Heights boardwalk at the Jersey shore."

thought this thread was about dating

I thought this was about QBN as a whole.
Seriously though, he's 22, is married, and already has 2 kids. He looks like he could be 35-40 in that picture.

why is it so sad? (must add i didn't read it)
i believe it is wise in life to always be prepared for the worst. save up. don't buy ridiculously expensive things (how would they make you GENUINELY happy?). Learn to find joy in being healthy and to be able to eat everyday.
Life isn't about status, big cars or any superficial nonsense like that.
People who still believe that need to work on their self-conscious.
- what's not "genuinely happy" about driving a BMW???!?!zarkonite

oh and by the way, currently i work in a hotel a few days a week at 8 euro's per hour.
i met a IT specialist from Oxford, England there, he came to Amsterdam as an expat and now does the same job as me. We became friends, same interests and sense of humour. that's a plus. we would otherwise never have got to know each other.
It's a good time to come to your senses and find out what counts in life.
- +1, been thinking about getting a second job bartending againd_rek

Yeah that's a good point janne76. When I think back to some of the other jobs I've had I think it was actually more fun than siiting in front of a damn computer all day

Seaside Heights? Wow. You can't get much lower in terms of crappy seaside tourist sinkholes in NJ.

i have seen a few millionaires lose their riches and usually the last thing they let go of is the plaque at the country club with their name on it. i swear they'd rather starve than let others know that their wealth status has declined.
- I've know a few people like this, very sad.Jnr_Madison
- *runs to country club to make sure plaque is still there...NotByHand
- they'll pry my plaque from my cold, dead hands********

no shame in a survival job. income is income

Not sad if you consider it as a temporary thing while he searches for something better.

What? He's only 22... give me a break...

If he works 7,000 hours this year, he'll be $6,000 ahead!

Answer me this: What was Mr. Villanueva's job? How did he earn that $50k?
That article makes it seem like all these white-collar workers are having to take embarrassing minimum wage jobs. The article even opens by claiming that the Tilt-A-Whirl operator this summer might be an accountant.
Fact time: The article doesn't cite a single credible instance of this happening. Mr. Villanueva is the sole evidence of someone taking a dramatic paycut. The catch is, we don't even know what he was doing to earn that $50,000. He could have just been hired because his Uncle is the CEO. Who fucking knows. The fact that the article ommits what his JOB actually was is troubling.
The only other actual case the article presents is a college Sophmore applying for a job at a hotel and...GASP! not hearing back from them! The article cranks up the hyperbole by claiming this 20 year old might have to return to Russia to find a job! And after all that work applying to a single hotel!
The article hearsay and statistical gloom-dooming. Not worthy of a thread post.

i was thinking the same thing kaonashi....was actually wondering how this guy was pulling down 50k at a place that rents out sound and video equipment
love how the media twists this kind of thing. a local news station here in toronto (global news) came to do an interview with us about a site we own (http://beforelastcall.com) to ask us about online ticket sales for new years events. we said that sales had been the same if not better than last year but that people were taking longer to make the decision.
they somehow twisted it to make it seem like no one was buying tickets
