Hard to Find Sneakers

I've been trying to track down a few pair of the Vans Vault shoes since discovering them recently. I somehow got a free subscription to Complex magazine last year and always love seeing what they've got featured.
Anyhow, I'm sure some of you have tracked down some custom/special versions of shoes before. They never seem to be available at a main company site, and are only in store or found through blog after blog to some online store.
Any tips on finding shoes that are either going to sell out quick or are hard to find in the first place?

- I could go to the sneaker shop around the corner and buy these for you. We could set up a paypal transaction or something?Andrew_D
- Do they actually have them? I'm going to try a local store tonight, if not, maybe so.mg33
- The only thing is the pair I saw were beige/cream/white/ca... <- Not sure, exactly.Andrew_D
- I just know they weren't black, but they might have black.Andrew_D

I have a store right down the street that is a Vans Vault distributor, I'll have to swing by there and see if they do special orders. Since I'm only talking Vans specifically, here's the site: http://vault.vans.com/

I couldn't find my kicks for a couple months after moving the last time. Looked high, looked low, they were nowhere. Finally found them in the back of the car. THOSE were some hard to find sneakers.
- My sneakers were once in the back of your car too I think. Not in a gay way though, just in a regular guys way.Horp
- Yeah, I thought those were yours. That was after we went to that regular guys Villiage Peoplepylon
- Dress-Up party in the East End. That was pretty fun in a regular guys way...pylon
- I was the Native American one specifically because they are known to never actually be gay.Horp

mg33 I always find that when sneakers are likely to sell out really quick its a good idea to buy them really early soon after first hearing about them.
For any that are going to be hard to find I generally just start looking around really quickly, and I search really hard with a frowny face, stooped over and scuttling about from shop to shop, mumbling inaudibly to myself.

Horp,
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm really curious how up to date Complex's issues are with their shoes. Those mags are created at least a couple months before issue date, so no idea how totally gone shoes will be by the time their featured.

I fucking hate that shit. I'm totally against the elusiveness of sneakers.

They'd not be sneakers if they weren't elusive, Kelpie. They're sneaky by definition.

kelpie,
I'm with you, but at the same time, sometimes it's nice to have something that you won't see on many people. I don't like really flashy shoes, just stuff that's subtly cool and "me."
The regular Vans line made some chukkas that were two colors of light grey on the upper/lower, with white sole, and I LOVE them. They're just getting a bit dirty.
I also recently got some of the John Varvatos Converse hi-tops, but those things DO NOT fit my feet. I've given up on converse - they're just too narrow for my feet. Vans are great though.

mg33 would you really want to risk being caught wearing last seasons shoes? You're almost certainly better off going out to buy the latest urban street style "ZINE" in your area and seeing what is hott at the moment and wear to buy those next-level products. That way you will really stand out at the big gallery openings and music events.
