QBN'ers,
I'm interesting in learning of agencies that do design-related work for the military or government - would anyone happen to know of any? I know Critical Mass has done some work for NASA, but that's as far as my knowledge goes for agencies involved in that industry.
Otherwise, are most logos, websites, interactive learning DVDs, and so forth done in-house for the government / military sector (CIA, NSA, FBI, Army, etc.)? I'm only aware of the CIA employing in-house graphic and multimedia designers, but there must be more.
And if anyone knows the dealio on the same topic regarding the Canadian Forces that'd be appreciated, too. I just am really not in the know about the work for this mili/gov't industry and would be interested to learn more.

Well I could tell you, but I'd have to kill you

In Australia agencies do the majority of government work that isn't "sensitive". Not necessarily large shops either. We did quite a bit of online work for the justice department last year and we are by no means a big player..
A standard tender/pitching process is involved here so it's just like going after any other large client.
- I checked the site out that you guys made, very nice.rzrffglyr

hey - the only one I know of is Crye Associates and were featured in AIGA's Fresh Dialogue 6. From the look of their site (google Crye Associates) they do a LOT of industrial design - but i BELIEVE they're responsible for the new camo-pattern... Check em out

Leo Burnett used to do design for the US army.

Thanks for the references all, and that makes sense - regarding non-sensitive material being handled by any agency that wins the pitch. I can only assume all sensitive material is handled in-house, then, but it just doesn't seem that some organizations even hire for these jobs, so it was a bit confusing.

i thought they just cam here for stuff
http://www.templatemonster.com/c…- ahah, but those look better than some of the mili sites i've seen.rzrffglyr

nice site! i think im going to start charging things by "price" and "unique price"... I'll say "well, this identity will cost around $1,500... but i'll give it to you for the UNIQUE price of $6,000"
- gentleman0
lol
i'm guessing if you dont buy the 'unique' - they are still allowed to sell on the same template :D :D

to shed some light on this, within the army their is an actual MOS (military occupational specialty) of 25M - Multimedia Illustrator.
I enlisted as that MOS nearly 6 years ago, and in training learned everything from pastel portrature to web design. For all internal communications 25Ms provide the graphics. However, the national advertising campaigns are done by outside sources, I believe McCann Worldgroup was in charge of the new "army strong" campaign.
As you can probably see my username is twentyfivemike, as is the name of my design studio. Tactical marketing + strategic design, hoo-ah!

This is a total wild card. It could be an amazing job, or you could be slave to the bureaucracy.

wtf?
Important Notice: Friends, family, individuals, or organizations may be interested to learn that you are an applicant for or an employee of the CIA. Their interest, however, may not be benign or in your best interest. You cannot control whom they would tell. We therefore ask you to exercise discretion and good judgment in disclosing your interest in a position with the Agency. You will receive further guidance on this topic as you proceed through your CIA employment processing.
- lol that caught my attention too, but it makes senserzrffglyr

I'm in talks with a government agencies about acquiring a Little green friend to have around the office on placement. we had a monkey a month ago but the little fucker got out of hand. These little aliens are suppose to be mush more controllable, and words is there quit good at creative thinking, what with space travel and flying spaceships and all that shit. Handy?

Thanks again. Well I did some poking around regarding the Canadian Forces, too. This is closest to design you'll get if you want to work on the field (and possibly get killed on the job):
http://www.forces.ca/html/imager…I'm still interested in finding out about in-house teams like the CIA job, but for Canadian organizations. However not much seems to turn up other than computer science-y and IT positions. I mean who designs for the sensitive material around here? Beats me.

I was on a new biz pitch once for a big military account and it was pretty interesting, to say the least. There are some interesting work done for that business segment.
I think McCann has US Army, JWT - US Marines, Campbell-Ewald - US Navy, GSD&M - US Air Force.

I work a civilian for the US Army within the Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Division... which is a civilian ran support organization for the military. I work at a desk here in the safety of my office, not the front lines. Good benefits and job security make up for the lower comparable salary and limited creative freedom, in my opinion. If you're interested, there are websites listing NAF positions within the military available to civilians through the civilian personnel office.
