would anyone know how to open a .dxf file
- illustrator CS3 crashes every time :(

i´d try to open/import it with a standalone tool (tehre´s tons of freeware for this) and re-export (maybe with different specs), then try again to import. do you konw what the source app for this particular .dxf is? might help.

its a design that is in the process of being patented - so can't send.

ok no problem.
past work I used to receive kitesurf plan inDXF or DWG, I simply imported them in Ai and scaled it to fit the artboard.- I've tried "open" from within Illy.
And tried place into an Illy file.
how do I "import"?alicetheblue - I've got thefrench version "iporter".. might place as well. but it used to worked on the files Iwasgiven.dyspl

if the data is not too complex, i´d ask them to deliver a multigigapixel jpg and (live)-trace it. i never actually tried, but i doubt that illustrator can handle real 3d data well, if at all.

dyspl ---- he saved it in a different DFX version and it opens! phew
now in Illy the paths are made of so many stokes - no closed paths - it will be a nightmare to paint and add gradients
would you know of any work arounds?
