Can being one ever be considered a good thing? Or does it just waste time and money?

What is perfection?
- monospaced0
Being a perfectionist can definitely be a good thing, but it's best kept for the final stages (design). No use fussing over kerning on preliminary concepts, although the perfectionist in me always wants to.

just tell them you have ocd

Most 'perfectionists' just have a big ego and are anal retentive.
- Meeklo0
I agree..
by definition, perfection is nearly impossible to achieve, so if you call yourself a perfectionist, you are just letting people know you have a big ego, thats all.- that's silly. it's an expression, not literalhorton

One designer's idea of "perfection" is another designer's "average"
- same goes for women.Frosty_spl

but if you really want to get high by smelling your own farts, make sure you tell people this, and out of nowhere, even if the other person was talking about a recent movie they saw, or better yet, if you don't know the person at all, and he/ she was not talking to you.
"People tell me, my biggest defect is that a perfectionist"
(Make sure you say that with your eyes closed, facing the person you are talking to)

some perfectionists are people that fear criticism and saying something is "finished" puts it out there to be judged. if they can forever say "i'm still working on it" perhaps it is a form of protection
- don't you get more criticism if it is a work in process?
something finished you would be less likely to go back and changenicole_marie

Interesting..
but in reality, it's never fully finished is it? :)If you hear someone say "oh I'm done with that, and I'm extremely happy of how it works, looks and flows" then well, I dont know what happens.. I have never met someone like that in my life

Being a perfectionist doesn't mean a big ego per se. I think it usually just means that people care deeply about their work, and give every project due diligence with particular attention to the details.
I don't think I've ever heard of a good designer who *isn't* a perfectionist.
- name one designer that thinks its a pefectionist, and link his portfolio here... :)Meeklo
- You're talking to him. I'm obsessed with making everything excellent.Scotch_Roman
- "it's" comments? You're not a perfectionist.Josev

I consider myself a perfectionist. It certainly has it's fair share of pros and cons. I'm always seeing the imperfections in the work I do, and I'm never really satisfied with my work, but it does keep me exploring more ideas, or refining my concepts. It certainly feeds into my confidence, and I definitely don't have a big ego because of my constant awareness of what I didn't do.

Perfectionist = Laze
In order to be a perfectionist you must have all your work incomplete and constantly in progress, you can't never meet a deadline, ever.
- *lazyMeeklo
- looks like your onenicole_marie
- that sounds like an excuse, and utter b.s. I meet deadlines fine, I'm just not entirely satisfied with the results even though the clients areimavery
- clients areimavery
- likewise marie, but you took it to another level! :)Meeklo
- i meant because you didn't finish your sentence correctly, then came back and finished it again. there for being incompletenicole_marie
- that was just an error, not laziness. :)Meeklo

I for one consider myself a perfectionist, and am totally obsessive about details; but I know that *actual* perfection is unachievable. Sure doesn't keep me from trying, though.
- harlequino0
I wish I had the time to be a perfectionist. I spend enough effort just trying to drag things up to levels of "competent" and "acceptable." :/

-imavery http://imavery.net/Ok, I retract myself, I just met a true perfectionist right here.
