My main focus is retouching photographs. I am trying to decide between the Wacom 4 small or medium. Id like to save a little money on the small but wanted to know if the extra room is worth it. I do play around with illustrations here and there but not as my main purpose.

yeah, bigger is usually better. IMO, you can go too big, as the 2 largest intuos might necessitate moving your arm over an area that might be too big for comfort. Especially if you like keeping your pallates to the edge of the screen.
Also, make sure you get one thats the same aspect ratio as your screen. (or as close as possible. they make widescreen ones.)
