I was just going to mention emails. As long as you have written confirmation (even email) you probably have some grounds. Small claims would probably uphold the theory that a 1500 dollar job doesn't warrant a hard copy signed contract. If you have any kind of agreement in principle via email you might be cool.

agreed with babaganush above, i took a company to small-claims court and won based on our email conversation. it's not a binding contract or anything but it's evidence for sure.

Emails are legal documents You really only need that as long as you have it in writing threaten legal action your more likely to recieve payment versus them actually hiring a lawyer to defend themselves over something that could wreck their name.

my first freelance job i did the same thing i thought because i knew the person who referred me i wouldn't get ripped off, but i did.
i learned a lot form the situation, got a great contract written up and moved on. never happened again.
i am sorry though, it was and is painful.
