Re: ArsenicPants - Agreed radio is crap except for come CBC shows which would be playing Canadian bands anyway. Don't know of any commercial radio I would listen to.

but actually that said, it does make a big diff on college radio content and is huge for getting indie bands that "street level" exposure.
i would go so far as to say Can Con's influence on Canadian college radio has gone a long way to promote and float some pretty fantastic Canadian indie bands.

^ case in point; Sloan, Buck65... being in Vancouver I would of never heard of these East Coast talents had it not been for Can Con on college and alt AM radio.

Can Con is fantastic as it protects our airwaves from being saturated with American content.
But stations that play shit like nickelback and dion would suck regardless of Can Con or not.
The only place where it makes a huge difference is on the CBC Radio- which is government funded anyway and plays much Canadian content much higher that 30% anyways. So the real extent of Can Con's effectiveness is hard to gauge.

I think i'm ok with it. you can get some really good bands that get played. and now that generates better bands which would get played regardless of cancon. But, in a business sense is it fair to tell broadcasters to play something that maybe there is not demand for. they have a commitment to generate revenue to feed the fat cats.
another Canadian thing is that TV broadcasters have to pay into a fund that is used to produce TV shows. and many are complaing that the money is wasted because Canadians can't produce good TV that interests viewers....except maybe Flashpoint, Corner Gas and the Hilarious House of Frightenstein.

- haha haven't heard or seen any of these: "Flashpoint, Corner Gas and the Hilarious House of Frightenstein"horton
- Flashpoint is a CTV production that CBS picked up.transmission
- FlashPoint is not bad actually. But its on Friday, so hard to catch.ETM

and lets not forget it's TV as well. Con-con has given us "classics" from Street Legal to Corner Gas.

if it wasnt for cancon, there would be no breaker high, and if there was no breaker high, there would be no young hercules, and if there was no young hercules, there would be no internet, and if there was no internet, then we all become internet "friends"
