And we need to make a case to continue using Macs. We're graphic designers specialising in print. Anyone got any good ammo that would help us?

Learning a new interface and operating system would slow you down, insist the company pay for PC and Windows training. That'll make them think twice.
- flashbender0
they are shinier?
Seriously, there is no reason that any IT person can not easily connect a bunch of macs to a predominately pc network.
Tell them that any potential cost savings the company expects to see will be offset by lower productivity as everyone struggles with the PC OS.
- TruffleShuffler0
We're already connected to the network! It all started because we couldn't connect to the Canon printer that all the PC users use and needed our own standalone printer but now it's just turned into a crazy vendetta where they're determined to switch us to PCs! We're just looking for as many reasons as possible so all comments welcome!

you will have to buy new software for windoze ;)
- kelpie0
£2K for the Adobe Master Collection, maybe a bit less just for design permium
to be honest I don't really see why you couldn't use a good PC to design on BUT, it would require retraining with the OS, or a period of lower productivity as you get used to Windows.
Macs are fit for design and what you expect to use as a professional, would they tke kindly to being asked to switch? they are justifying salaries and positions by latching onto something they can take upstairs as a 'project'. Not fair, but you may actually be utterly fucked, particularly as it looks like you work for the local authority and not an agency. This sounds like the kind of petty bureaucratic shite your bosses will get right into. Better than actually doing work eh?
- Ahhh, I fear you have seen into the heart of the matter...
TruffleShuffler - that's just one licence, if a team is big enough they should reconsiderjimbojones

Sounds like you've got a new IT guy who has never used Mac's before. He's proposing this because he doesn't like Mac's and secondly because he wants to hit the big boss with an 'impressive project' to justify his position.
IT guys can blag CE's with their techy bullshit. You don't stand much chance of getting out of this one unless you can put a case towards the finance guys and explain how much it's going to cost - hardware, software and training.
There is nothing a Mac can't do on a Windows network, be it filesharing, exchange, whatever.
Good luck my friend.

what about the fonts you use.
even if you can use them on both systems, you will have problems opening mac projects in flash for instance. it's not that easy to switch.

Kill the IT guy?
- Could be our only hope... anyone got a number for a hitman?TruffleShuffler
- I just quit designing to become a hitman, it would be my first job so it'll be cheap.ipissexcellence
- I know a monkey who can do it for peanuts.********

Just get on with it and use a PC. It's the end of the world.

• Productivity issues (retraining, unhappiness of the people that have to do the work, relearning of shortcuts, slower going back and forth between programs/windows/files, windows asks for permission for everything, start using new programs like new html editors, etc...)
• They should not dictate what you use on a daily basis to perform your tasks. It's your job and you would know better.
• macs are simpler, easier to operate for the user.
• software compatibility issues (photoshop, illy, flash, premier, etc...). Would would have to spend money of pc version of software, no?
• font issues. ther'e opentype, truetype, pc postscript, mac postscript, not all your *tools* (fonts) will work, unless someone spends time (or money) on font conversion. You might also have to issues with your current font management software.
• macs are more usable and convenient than pcs for designers. There's tons of designer goodies out there that are only available for the macs.
• If macs are used for design all around the world... with total succes and no know issues... how come your bunch of IT guys can't work with them? makes them incompetent or lazy. They shouldn't reinvent the wheel. State that macs are sorta industry standard for designers.
• Not so many security concerns (viruses, etc...)
• mans need less maintenance therefore cheaper as time is not wasted (this is why IT guys need pcs around).
• Assume most of the designers in that place own their own macbook and shit... it's makes all the sense in the world to keep the macs at work as well.
• After a while, some will eventually move on and find new jobs... there's a chance that when this people find new jobs they'll need to readjust themselves again to working with macs coz macs are standard in the design business.
• simple logic — if macs are by far the most dominant system in the industry, why change things at you office?
• macs are better to work with ith large projects that require several program and files opened at the same time.- Thank you, thank you, thank you.TruffleShuffler
- Nearly all of that list is total bollocks.jamble
- fuck off jamblemonospaced
- it will also complicate matter with your print shop.zarkonite

what is his stated justification for switching you all over to macs, and has he considered all of the above difficulties, in terms of both direct purchasing of products etc and indirect cost of man hours needed to switch everything over, installation etc?
- To be honest, I don't think they've considered much beyond just wanting to treat us like users who only need to use Word and Excel. Hopefully they'll see some sense when
we put forward our case.TruffleShuffler

and the final one...
• Going with PCs won't speed anything up and won't benefit the business. Period.
- kelpie0
"After a while, some will eventually move on and find new jobs... there's a chance that when this people find new jobs they'll need to readjust themselves again to working with macs coz macs are standard in the design business."
I'd state that one the other way round if you're going to; that people who fill new positions where you are will likely have to learn a new system along with a new job every time, impacting on productivity. they won't give a shit how well you get on once you leave

"It all started because we couldn't connect to the Canon printer that all the PC users use"
Sounds extremely familiar.
Probably a no brainer for management anyway - PC's are cheaper.
- kezza_20
I'd leave any design agency where IT have any influence over how creative roll.
they SUPPORT what you do, not influence, tell them to fuck off.
- i think they work for a local gov agency...

Wait a second, all the fuss because of a PRINTER? Get on the Canon hotline and get it sorted, why would anyone buy a whole new hardware, software, train the users to switch to a new OS, have home office compatibility issues and whatnot because of a fucking Canon printer?!
You can quote me.- pfft. Get on the apple hotline.********
- either way, it's only a matter of bad drivers or something, not a reason to overhaul the workflowjimbojones

^^^^ +1
It works both ways. That switch to PCs would a fucking bump on the road either way. Who the hell knows... some potential employees might even be turned off by the fact that your business doesn't go with the standard (macs)... It says quite a bit of the business. it's make them old-fashioned and like they are not up-to-date.
An extra one that they will not give a shit about... There's a lot of this that designers do with their macs. macs a re lifestyle... there's the fucking ipod, iphone, gadgets, shit people use to chill, to remain connected to the world while working... this shit will stop... and the workers won't be so happy about it. No happy workers = not the best performance/faster turnaround of employees.
- that was a +1 at kelpie's comment.VectorMasked
- i would never work somewhere that asked me to design on a PCDeks
- kezza_20
On that note we are moving EVERYONE in our organisation (500+) to all MAC.
And the reason: IT LOOKS FUCKING BETTER. END OF.

Of course they have influence kezza. They probably have budgets. Just because you'd rather drive a ferrari doesn't mean a fiesta can't perform the same task.
I'd sack the lot of you. Bunch of squealing queens...
- Don't think anyone would actually want to work for you though********
- a fiesta does not, and cannot, perform the same tasks as a ferrari...at least not in this worldmonospaced
- You really are a piece of shit.itsmitch
- so they get to say use a PC to do what you have been doing with a MAC? bullsh*tsherm
