My girlfriend and I have been debating, a new Digital SLR or a simple but good point and shoot. We are in no rush at all, but then this deal stumbled across my desk, and after reading reviews, I'm still up in the air.

Professional opinions welcome.

I'm liking the Lumix G1.. reasonably big sensor (4/3 system), interchangeable lenses, manual zoom, fast shoot rate, combined with (properly executed) Live View, 3" swivelling screen and auto-switchover from screen to (electronic) viewfinder using a proximity sensor.
- and really good 'intelligent auto', and program and manual modes, and face tracking and stuffribit

best photo's from a digital point 'n shoot I have come across are all from a ricoh GR digital II, it's quite expensive though

I don't think Sigma have a good reputation for quality. I think they have a reputation for good price at the expense of good quality.

How portable does it have to be?

I love my LX3

if you like the 28mm focal length, it's a good camera. i think you just can't have it all in a compact, i learned. i have a panasonic lx3 for a compact and it's all about compromises. kinda sucks.

get a cheap pocket camera (make sure it is small enough to fit easily in your pocket) and get a decent DSLR. Then you've got something you can take anywhere, parties, whatever and not worry about and something to take with you for better shots.
I bought my sister a G9, and while she loves it, she wishes she had the flexibility of a DSLR.

Thanks Not_Ghey, but there is not a specific thread about this camera, and so I asked. Is pointing to a filter item that may or may not have relevance the highest form of trolling?
Thanks everyone else, the pursuit is still on.

I'm a DSLR guy, but find a store and try a bunch of cameras, it should be obvious what you like soon. I've never found a compact fast enough for me, and I need a flash shoe. Unfortunately, the Sigma and Panasonic above are not commonly found in stores, they both seem to be specialty cameras, so make sure you can return it if you can't try it before you buy...

For a bit of perspective, I used to own a Panasonic Lumix LX-2, and I also used to own a Canon Digital Rebel (the original 6.3MP one). The DRebel's pictures are massively superior to the Lumix'. Way less noise, much sharper, higher dynamic range, etc.
So pay attention to sensor size. It matters a lot. You're on the right track with the DP-1, and the G-1 isn't a bad choice either.
Don't get the Ricoh GR-II, Lumix LX-3 or any other P&S digital compact unless you're going to be shooting for web only (i.e. resizing all your images to one megapixel or so) - then it won't matter so much.

I would prefer the DP2 focal length. The problem with LX3 is that it resets to 24mm when I turn off and I always find myself zooming all the way to 50-60mm which is so slow. Who wants to buy my LX3?

Review of DP1

I have the Sigma DP1, and researched quite a bit before buying it. Totally happy with it. Contrary to what Boobs said, it's an incredibly solid piece of kit - aluminum case - and I've not read anything that made me worry about lack of quality.

The fact that it lacks clutter is what drew me to it really. No pointless 'portrait' modes and all that.
- how do you like interface? is it fast to get around in manual mode?loaf

DSLR, go full frame, don't waste money stepping it up. it may seem expensive but it will cover your wants/needs/fun/work all very nicely. i suggest the 5D
