anyone out there ever been waitlisted for Grad School? I just got the letter in the mail and the initial thoughts are dissapointment/relief. If anyone has any good stories about being in a similar situation (and hopefully it worked out for them! - wether that means getting in or not getting in - which led to something greater) let me know... I could use the pep-talk :-(

maybe they're just not that into you?

How many did you apply to? What subject?
Law school waitlist = great
Med school waitlist = great
Art History PhD waitlist = not so grand

Being waitlisted isn't bad, at least you were not rejected right away. Schools handle waitlists in different ways. You may just be put on a list behind whoever was waitlisted before you, and if enough people decline their acceptance you will get in. The school I am at reviews all the applicants on the waitlist and decides who in the group is most qualified if spots open up. You are not "in line." Now, if the school you applied to uses a method similar to this you can contact the admissions office and ask if there is anything you can add to your app that my help you get noticed like an extra letter of recommendation. It may be enough that you are calling and expressing extra interest in the program , and not just sitting back and waiting that can help. Fortunately, I didn't have to do this, but I don't think it will hurt you to call to check on the status or try to get noticed.
I hope this makes sense ... good luck.

i think the term you are looking for is "put on the waiting list"

i would go to grad school if they would casually overlook my 2.3 GPA while i wow them with a stack of business cards i designed.

It can be useful to have the masters if you plan to teach... but not always necessary.

wait-lists usually work like -
Yale accepts 10 people per year. Under probability atleast one or two will decline. Leaving two open spots - one of those two open spots is waiting for you, but they can't give it to you until they know.

Did you apply to the two year or three year? They only accept 8 into each year.

actually Yale GD accepts 6 into the 3 year and 10 into the 2 year each year. Usually and this is not always the case, people accepted into the program don't typically decline, as Yale is often a top choice. However if you don't get in this year, re-apply for next year .... and by all means continue developing your own work.

I just got into Yale 2 year off the wait list.
- Really, you got into the Yale MFA program? Congrats - That will be an amazing experience.frediscrazy
