It's time to put together some new work and update a bit my portfolio...
I would like to show my works in a nicer way than just a screen capture of each illustration/logo etc...
As I can't get my hand on most of the finished products, I was thinking about using live surface images.
But I wonder if this will look too generic (and kinda fake/student work) or if that's fine?
what's your opinion?

im not sure too.
im in the same situation as im working in a digital shop most of my print owrk is freelance and usually for low budget clients who never trump up for proper printing.. so theres no point taking nice shots of the finish product.
i'm probably going to have to either use flats or fake em up a bit :(
i guess presentation is a quality in itself. and in advertising/design a lot of the time you are going to have to roll turds in glitter.. so showing an ability to do so might get me some points :P

What you could do is photograph some blank posters/cards/whatever yourself and shop them with your designs. They'll look nicer and not generic.
- Isn't that Livesurface?uncle_helv
- @uncle_helv :yes, but you can only choose betewen a few angle, which is a bit annoying.dyspl

subjective: I always like to see Identity in application. It's always nice to see illustrations (if they're detailed enough) that are shot well with a large overview shot and then maybe some detail shots. But these things are dependant upon a number of other factors (some of which you alluded to already).

I think a portfolio should demonstrate your application as a designer, layout, typography, colour, form etc. I don't think showing them on Live Surface is going to detract from your work, or make it look generic, but if your work is poor then putting them on live surface aint going to make them look any better, I think it is a nice platform, for some who doesn't have a camera or studio, or the skills to make nice images, or as you say can't get hold of finished samples.

- My view is if used well I think LiveSurface can add value to your work.uncle_helv
- For sure. I've used it too. Great for when you don't have good samples, or for showing work that was never printed.Scotch_Roman

dyspl: livesurface is fairly limiting, but perspective, background, and dimensions can be tweaked to a certain degree. I used livesurface for a couple projects on my site, and it produced what I needed. Specifically, I used it for the Twin Oaks style guide and the Formica ATTS book (the second Formica project on my site, which isn't shown on Krop).

If you haven't got print samples to shoot than I see no problem in using stock dummies/live surface to add context to work rather than just showing flat artwork.
I've just mocked up a bunch of stuff myself in fact.

Scotch_Ronan : good to know you used it on some projects, since I like your works and the way you show them.
I would go for d_rek option, but 1)My photo studio is my main room at home, which I have to share with a bull terrier... doing a photoshoot is quite tricky.. 2)my photographer skills are way lower than people who shot livesurface product.
That's why I'm thinking about livesurface.
My main concern (well, without speaking of cost of each image) is the few options for each product shots.
I might try to take some shot of blank products myself, and if I'm not happy with the result, I'll go for livesuface.

livesurface consists in images for photoshop with vanishing points and swadows/light effects already set.
All you have to do is paste your work.
The images are 29dollars each.- ok cool
bit steep for a psd file no ?WeLoveNoise - ys, I find price a little too high. but the result is pretty good. You should try their free sample.dyspl
