I'm now 100% freelance with a good steady client, but will need to begin marketing myself for the future. I have 2 domains now. One is my last name, which I've used for my personal portfolio, the other a more company-like domain I've had for over 10 years that most people know me through.
So my question to those of you who freelance.... Do *you* market yourself by name, or through a "company name"? Do you have a DBA and registered as a real business? Have you gone one way, and wished you did the other? Do you have a company-name like domain by bill clients under your own name? I'm going to be making up some new business cards, but I'm not sure which direction to take.

I do both, depending on the client and work. Design = My name and when I do illustration, I use a handle/ pseudonym. Both are under one business, though.

Far better to use your own name, especially in this economy. People are looking for cheap individuals to farm out freelance work, not studios/firms with an entire staff to support.

put on both website message that your "Last Name" has been acquired by "Your Company Name"

I'm actually in a very similar situation right now.
I opted to go with my own name to market myself, for a few of the following reasons.
1.) I establish a personal relationship with my clients who know me by name.
2.) I don't want to pretend that I'm a company that's larger than 1 person. Part of my marketing is that when my clients me, they get ME.
3.) It seemed easier than having to set up a company name and worry about checks being made out in the company name, etc...
