That gridhouse looks amazing..
what do you guess would be the price range as opposed to buy a house? Do you get rebates from the gov for supporting this technology?- here's the stats on the glidehouse and it depends on green technology used.moveinspace

- This is my big question. With prices low, I was thinking I'd buy a plot of land and go from there.grymes

Marmol Radzinar, Michelle Kaufmann, Rocio Romero, Hive Modular, and Resolution:4 are all solid. My favorite right now is the one arthur posted in the architecture thread.

grymes to answer your question in the note above. don't be fooled by the price of prefabs. They can easily run the same costs as a regular home especially when one considers all the upgrades most of these have. The true advantage of a prefab is that it can be built fast and some can be built by yourself or with only a contractor. No architect or other general contract work i.e. framers, painters is needed. In terms of gov. discounts they vary from project to project depending on LEED factors and other circumstances. Just do some research before you buy. Getting a home is no joke and a big desicion.

Also be sure to check with your local building department if they have regulations, etc. with prefabs...

Anyone know anything about resale of prefabs? Value, and such?
- akrokdesign0
i think prefab's keeps there value good, maybe a bit better then a reg. house. also if it has solar already, think it makes it more attractive. of course, you put that on, any house.
the prices on prefab is hard though. i mean, what will it actually cost. the total.

Depends on the market. For the uneducated (read: those that don't read Dwell), "PreFab" means "cheap".
We designed a prefab duplex, went all the way through drawings, factory tours, etc., but was never built.
moveinspace has it right, the costs are not much different, it is more about the speed. But do research, blocking off streets to bring the crane is isn't cheap, etc., etc.

- ouch. aren't you in Stockholm right now? Is the land cheap there?moveinspace
- yep. '08 green build house 6 miles from austin tx, $220.000. about 1400 to 1600sq.akrokdesign

cost of land is big, foundation and site prep is ~1/3 total cost. interior finishing is ~1/3 total cost. This is the same whether you go prefab or build from scratch. you could probably build yourself cheaper than prefab most places.
these are pretty cool for remote areas: http://www.panabode.com/

design your own based around standard material sizes and specifications that can be built offsite and assembled. have an architect sign off on it. you save more and get more of what you want.
